The FedEx Cup Playoffs will reach their conclusion at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta from August 27-30, with a 30-player field competing for a $40 million purse and a $10 million winner's share. The format is again straightforward: every player starts at even par, there is no cut, and the golfer with the lowest 72-hole score wins both the TOUR Championship and the FedExCup. That change makes the tournament much more interesting from a betting perspective because Scottie Scheffler's No. 1 position in the FedExCup standings provides no scoring advantage once the tournament begins.
Scottie Scheffler is the clear favorite at +345 at DraftKings Sportsbook, but the market is giving substantial respect to Rory McIlroy, Ludvig Aberg, Wyndham Clark, Xander Schauffele and Sam Burns as well. Clark arrives after winning the BMW Championship by 3 shots, while McIlroy finished third and Patrick Cantlay finished second.
Cantlay is my preferred outright play because the market has pushed a considerable amount of attention onto Scheffler, McIlroy, and Clark. Scheffler deserves his status as the favorite after winning the FedEx St. Jude Championship by 8 shots, but he followed that performance with a T12 at the BMW Championship while dealing with an illness that affected his grip. He is still an elite contender, but +345 leaves considerably less room for error than Cantlay's price.
Cantlay has repeatedly produced at East Lake, and his recent ball-striking stats fit what the course has demanded since its restoration. Our model gives him an 8.5% chance to win, compared with a 5.4% implied probability at +1750. That produces a 3.1% edge, enough to qualify as a playable outright wager under our criteria.
The absence of starting strokes fundamentally changes the way this tournament should be handicapped. In previous editions, a golfer's position in the FedExCup standings could put several strokes between the favorites and the rest of the field before the first tee shot. That advantage is gone. All 30 players begin at even par, turning the tournament into a pure 72-hole test.
That makes recent form particularly important. Clark enters after controlling the BMW Championship from start to finish, while Cantlay and McIlroy both produced strong closing performances in St. Louis. Cantlay's 2nd-place finish is especially encouraging because his approach play was excellent throughout the week. He gained +0.86 strokes per round on approach over his previous 5 starts entering the BMW, already well above his season-long +0.55 mark.
Course analysis identifies strokes gained approach, proximity from 200+ yards, good drives gained, par-4 scoring and Bermuda putting as important areas for handicappers to examine. The course also places more emphasis on the second shot than driving distance.
Recent history reinforces that point. Tommy Fleetwood won in 2025 at 18-under par, gaining 2.6 strokes on approach and 9.2 strokes overall despite losing strokes around the green. Patrick Cantlay finished 2nd at 15-under. Cantlay also won the event in 2021, while McIlroy, Viktor Hovland and Scheffler have all produced championship performances at East Lake in recent years.
Weather could also influence scoring. The latest National Weather Service forecast calls for temperatures around 90 degrees on Thursday and Friday with substantial chances of showers and thunderstorms, followed by similarly warm conditions over the weekend. Rain could soften East Lake and increase the importance of approach precision while potentially creating easier scoring conditions.
East Lake is a Donald Ross design that underwent a major restoration led by Andrew Green before the 2024 TOUR Championship. The course was lengthened from 7,346 yards to 7,440 yards, the fairways were converted to Zoysia, the greens were converted to TifEagle Bermuda, and the greenside areas were reshaped to restore more of Ross' original concepts. New bunkers were also added to place greater importance on strategic tee shots.
The restored layout has made East Lake a demanding test for approach play and overall ball striking. The course features 4 par 3s, 12 par 4s, and 2 par 5s, with water coming into play on 8 holes. The combination of length, firm fairways and demanding green complexes means players need to control their approach shots rather than relying solely on driving distance.
All of that could be incredibly beneficial for Cantlay. His current approach form is among the strongest in the field, and his record at East Lake provides additional evidence that his game translates to the venue. With the starting-stroke system gone, he no longer needs to overcome a deficit created by his FedExCup position. The tournament begins on equal terms, and at +1750, Cantlay is the golfer our model believes offers the clearest outright value.
