North Carolina vs TCU Preview: Will We See Another Week 0 Upset in Ireland?

North Carolina and TCU kick off the 2026 college football season on Saturday, August 29, at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland. It's a rematch of last year's season opener, when TCU entered Chapel Hill as a 3.5-point favorite and had no trouble covering in a 48-14 blowout win.
A year later, Bill Belichick and the Tar Heels get another shot at the Horned Frogs after a disappointing first season. Let's take a closer look at the matchup and what we can expect in Ireland.
Our top pick for North Carolina vs TCU is TCU team total Over 27.5 points. The ATS Quantitative Model projects a 34-20 TCU win, giving us some breathing room above the 27.5-point line. You can check out our full North Carolina vs TCU prediction for more betting data, odds, and analysis.
For me, this is more of a bet on TCU's offense than one against North Carolina's defense. The Horned Frogs lost star quarterback Josh Hoover to defending national champion Indiana, but they brought in senior Harvard transfer Jaden Craig to replace him. He'll have an experienced offensive line in front of him, along with returning playmakers like wide receiver Jordan Dwyer and running back Jeremy Payne.
There are some question marks on the other side, too. North Carolina will be without defensive coordinator Steve Belichick, who is currently on indefinite medical leave, and the Tar Heels lost their top three tacklers from last season. TCU put up 48 points on the road against UNC a year ago. We don't need anything close to that this time around — just four touchdowns.
We like the Big 12 favorite in this matchup, but recent history in Ireland may not be on our side. Underdogs have won outright in each of the last two Week 0 games in Dublin. Georgia Tech stunned No. 10 Florida State 24-21 as a 10.5-point underdog in 2024, and No. 22 Iowa State followed that up by beating No. 17 Kansas State 24-21 as a three-point underdog last year.
In fact, upsets have become pretty common in the modern Aer Lingus College Football Classic. Notre Dame had no trouble with Navy in 2023, winning 42-3 as a 20.5-point favorite, but Northwestern also upset Nebraska 31-28 as a 13.5-point underdog in 2022.
Of course, four games is a very small sample size, and we're not changing our college football picks just because North Carolina is an underdog playing in Ireland. But three outright upsets in four years is at least worth mentioning. Maybe the Tar Heels have a better chance of pulling off a Week 0 stunner than we think.
Bill Belichick's first season at North Carolina didn't exactly go as planned. The Tar Heels finished just 4-8 overall and 2-6 in ACC play, and honestly, the high point of the season may very well have been their touchdown on the opening drive of the season against TCU. I'll admit, after they took that 7-0 lead, I was already imagining Belichick competing for ACC championships and having UNC in the playoff conversation for years to come. As it turned out, that was about as good as things would get.
TCU went on to win that game 48-14, and UNC lost its first three games against Power Four opponents by a combined score of 120-33. Things briefly started looking up later in the year with a narrow overtime loss to eventual ACC runner-up Virginia and back-to-back wins over Syracuse and Stanford, but the Tar Heels closed the season with a 42-19 blowout loss to in-state rival NC State.
That leaves Belichick with plenty of pressure heading into Year 2. DraftKings Sportsbook has North Carolina's 2026 win total at just 4.5 wins, and the Tar Heels didn't exactly make a huge splash in the transfer portal. They did bring in fifth-year quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. from Wisconsin, while offensive guru Bobby Petrino was brought in to take over as offensive coordinator.
Unfortunately, many of UNC's biggest offseason headlines have once again come away from the field. General manager Michael Lombardi was placed on administrative leave pending an HR investigation, while defensive coordinator Steve Belichick is currently on indefinite medical leave.
Belichick now gets another chance against the team that started last year's downward spiral. A win over TCU in Ireland would give Tar Heel fans some much-needed optimism heading into Year 2. Another disappointing season, however, could leave some serious questions about how much longer the Belichick experiment will last in Chapel Hill.
TCU is coming off a strong 2025 season, finishing 9-4 and closing the year with an upset win over No. 16 USC in the Alamo Bowl. However, the Horned Frogs suffered a major loss after the regular season when star quarterback Josh Hoover entered the transfer portal and eventually landed with defending national champion Indiana.
That's a tough player to replace, but Sonny Dykes and company found an interesting option in Harvard transfer Jaden Craig. Craig was a standout at the FCS level, and TCU will hope he can make a similar jump to quarterbacks like Cam Ward and Trinidad Chambliss, who went from smaller programs to finding success at the Power Four level.
The Horned Frogs also added some experience up front, including Oklahoma State guard Noah McKinney and FIU transfer Jaheim Buchanon. With those additions and returning playmakers like Jordan Dwyer and Jeremy Payne, Craig should have a pretty solid supporting cast around him in his first year at TCU.
DraftKings has TCU's win total at 7.5 wins, juiced to the Under, but the Horned Frogs will have their sights set higher than that. TCU should have a chance to compete for a Big 12 championship, and if Craig can settle in quickly, a return to the College Football Playoff for the first time since 2022 isn't out of the question.
