Game Snapshot

  • Matchup: Oregon Ducks vs Northwestern Wildcats
  • Date & Time: Saturday, September 13, 12:00 p.m. ET
  • Venue: Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium, Evanston, IL
  • Broadcast: FOX

Key Storylines

  • Oregon is off to a fast start this season. They crushed Montana State in their season opener and followed that up with a 69-3 win over Oklahoma State. The Ducks have one power conference win under their belt and will look for a win in their Big Ten debut for this season.
  • Northwestern is 1-1 on the season. They lost their opener to Tulane by 20 points before bouncing back to defeat FCS Western Illinois. The Wildcats are not expected to get their first win over an FBS opponent this week against a national title contender in Oregon.
  • This is the first conference game scheduled this season between two Big Ten teams. The winner will have sole possession of first place in the conference standings, albeit for a short period of time.
  • This is a much smaller venue for Big Ten football than most teams are accustomed to. That will mean less crowd noise to try and deter the heavily favored Ducks.

Quarterback Play

Dante Moore has looked composed and efficient in his first starts for Oregon. Moore has thrown for 479 yards and six touchdowns with a 77% completion rate. This is his first road game as the starting quarterback of the Ducks and it will be interesting to see how he performs against a Northwestern team that hangs its hat on defense.

Northwestern’s Preston Stone has thrown for just over 400 yards in two games with three touchdowns and four interceptions. Stone threw four interceptions against Tulane and will have to cut back on the turnovers for the Wildcats to have a chance at competing with Oregon here.

  • Oregon is 2-0 against the spread to start this season.
  • Northwestern went 1-1 against the spread over their first two games.
  • These teams have played just once all-time. Oregon lost 14-10 to Northwestern in 1974.

Oregon vs Northwestern Model Projection

Score Projection: Oregon 41 – Northwestern 10

Win Probability: Oregon 88%, Northwestern 12%

Final Thoughts

Northwestern is going to try to be the more physical team and slow this game down to keep it close late. But I don’t think they are going to have much success with that and we should see Oregon win in a lopsided game to move to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the Big Ten.
