Key Storylines
Recent form
This is the first game of the season for both of these teams. Minnesota enters this season with a notable absence, as veteran forward Mats Zuccarello will be sidelined for 7–8 weeks with a lower-body injury. The Wild will lean more heavily on their top lines to fill that gap. The Blues will open this season at home after having a 24-14-3 season at home last year. They will try to take advantage of Zuccarello’s absence here.
Goaltending
The Wild locked in Filip Gustavsson on a five-year, $34 million extension just days ago, reinforcing confidence that he will remain their top netminder. He posted a .914 save percentage and 2.56 goals-against average last season. The Blues’ goaltending picture is centered around Jordan Binnington. Binnington saved 90% of the shots he faced last season and is one of the best Canadian goaltenders in the league today.
Key skaters
- For Minnesota, Kirill Kaprizov remains their offensive heartbeat. Without Zuccarello, secondary scoring and depth contributions from the middle six skaters will be more important than ever.
- Jordan Kyrou is a dangerous forward who made headlines last season for the Blues. He had a hat trick in a 5–1 victory over Minnesota in March last season. He will try to make a similar impact in this contest at home.

Final Thoughts
I am expecting a very close game between the Wild and Blues to start the 2025-26 season. If these teams were at full strength, I truly think that this contest could go either way, and it still could to some extent. But I think that home-ice advantage and some Minnesota injury issues will both help the Blues come away with the win here. I’ll go with St. Louis to get the job done thanks to some inspired play from Kyrou and the rest of the St. Louis attack.
