The Toronto Maple Leafs and Columbus Blue Jackets will face off in the NHL on Wednesday night. This is the only game on the NHL schedule on Wednesday night after every team in the league played in Tuesday's Frozen Frenzy. Both of these teams will try to turn around and win on the second night of a back-to-back here. Before the action begins in Ohio, continue reading to get my Maple Leafs vs Blue Jackets prediction.
Toronto has scored 3.5 goals per game this season but is surrendering 3.6 per game, placing them near the bottom of the NHL defensively. Their road results have been weak early in the season. Toronto is 0-2-0 away from home and will try to get back on track away from home here.
Columbus has won four of their last five outings and has been more stingy on defense. They are giving up 3.11 goals per game entering Wednesday night. The Blue Jackets are trending upward and will try to overcome having to travel back home overnight to continue operating at a high level.
Goaltending will be interesting to monitor in this game. Both teams are on the second leg of back-to-backs here. That could mean rotations in net after Jet Greaves had 35 saves for the Jackets last night and Anthony Stolarz stopped 29 shots for the Leafs.
William Nylander is the leader of the offense for the Leafs. He has 15 points to lead his team and his 12 assists have helped get other members of his team involved. Columbus' Dmitri Voronkov (5 goals, 4 assists) and Kirill Marchenko (5 goals, 4 assists) have given opposing defenses multiple options to worry about when Columbus has the puck in the offensive zone.
Player | Stat |
|---|---|
William Nylander (TOR) | Anytime goal scorer |
Auston Matthews (TOR) | Anytime goal scorer |
Dmitri Voronkov (CBJ) | Anytime goal scorer |
Score Projection: Toronto Maple Leafs 3 – Columbus Blue Jackets 4
Win Probability: Toronto Maple Leafs 45% | Columbus Blue Jackets 55%
It's tough to pick a winner in this game, as both teams have fatigue and travel concerns to deal with on top of their normal responsibilities when trying to win a hockey game. I think that the best bet for this game will be the over, as we should see both teams take advantage of tired defenders to put together a high-scoring matchup from Columbus.
