Key Storylines
New Orleans’ season has been ugly. They come in at 1-8 and were most recently thrashed 34-10 by the Los Angeles Rams. The Saints are among the league’s worst teams in run blocking, turnover margin, and passing offense. Their ground game has stalled, averaging roughly 62 rushing yards per game over their last five outings. New Orleans is averaging only 15.3 points per game, which ranks 31st in the league.
The Carolina Panthers have had a much better season. They are 5-4 on the year and got back above the .500 mark with an upset win on the road over the Green Bay Packers last week. Carolina’s defense showed up to slow down the Packers last week and their re-tooled running game features one of the top backs in the league this season in Rico Dowdle. Carolina will try to use all of that to get a second straight win and strengthen their chances of earning a shocking playoff berth.
Quarterback Play
New Orleans signal-caller Tyler Shough is early in his pro career and will look to shake off a rough performance in his last game. He threw for 176 yards with one touchdown and one interception in the loss to the Rams last week. The Saints appear content to let Shough struggle so they can get him valuable experience during a lost season.
Bryce Young of Carolina isn’t flashy or exciting at quarterback. But he is improving somewhat and that has helped the Panthers to get off to a decent start. Young’s job at this point is to just avoid turnovers and make enough plays to keep defenses honest while the running game has success. But he’s done an admirable job of that so far and will attempt to keep doing so.
Betting Trends

- Carolina has gone over the total in five of its first nine games.

Final Thoughts
I expect the strong start to the season for the Carolina Panthers to continue this week. The Saints are a mess offensively and shouldn’t do too much damage against the Carolina defense here. I’ll lay the points with the Panthers as they should continue threatening the established order in the NFC.
