Key Storylines
- Wins in Week 1 for both of these teams set the table for Monday night. The Chargers handled the Chiefs 27-21 in São Paulo and the Raiders closed strong to top the Patriots 20-13.
- Both quarterbacks looked comfortable in Week 1. Justin Herbert and Keenan Allen worked well together in LA’s opener. The Raiders got a solid game out of Geno Smith in his Raiders debut. His rapport with Brock Bowers was impressive.
- The Chargers may have cleared a big mental hurdle by beating a Chiefs team that has had their number in recent years. How they build on that result will be very telling about the makeup of that team on Monday Night Football.
- This is the home opener for the Raiders and the crowd could become a factor in this game. The Chargers have to travel back from Brazil and straight into a second consecutive game away from home. That could prove problematic for Jim Harbaugh’s team.
Quarterback Play
Justin Herbert looked sharp and decisive in Week 1. He completed 25 of 34 attempts for 318 yards and three touchdowns. He also had a 19-yard game-sealing scramble. The most encouraging sign for Los Angeles was Herbert’s distribution to different receivers. Allen worked the sticks and red zone, Ladd McConkey separated underneath and on crossers, and Quentin Johnston finished drives with two scores. Herbert’s efficiency on third down and inside the 20 gives the Chargers a clear edge if the pass protection for the Bolts holds up.
Geno Smith had a big opener of his own, throwing for 362 yards with a touchdown and an interception in a win at New England. He hit explosive plays to Bowers and Jakobi Meyers and kept the offense on schedule. The question for Smith is whether or not his level of play is sustainable against a better pass rush. Max protection and timing throws helped in Week 1. Against Los Angeles, he will need quick answers to simulated pressure and coverage disguises from the Chargers secondary.
Betting Trends & H2H
- Both teams covered the spread in their first game of the season.
- Both teams went under the total in their season openers.
- The Chargers went 6-3 on the road last season and will look to get off to a strong start in their first true road game of 2025.

Final Thoughts
This is going to be a close game between division rivals to close out the Week 2 slate. The passing attack that can make the fewest mistakes will give its team the inside track to victory here. And while I think the Chargers ultimately end up winning this game, I am taking the 3.5 points with the Raiders, as I project the margin to be inside of a field goal in either direction.
