Can Houston Rebound After Week 1 Disaster?
The first week of the college football season did not go as planned for the Houston Cougars. They were defeated 27-7 at home by the UNLV Rebels in a game where their offense just could not get going. This week, it could once again be tough for Houston to get its offense up and running as they face an Oklahoma team that was strong on defense in their first game of the 2024 campaign.
Against UNLV, Houston's rushing attack was nonexistent. Their leading rusher had just 17 yards on two carries, with the entire team ending up with just 38 yards on the ground. Needless to say, they are going to need to find some sort of production in the running game in this contest or Houston's defense is going to spend an uncomfortable amount of time on the field in this one.
Oklahoma Looks to Build On Strong Season Opener
The Oklahoma Sooners took care of business as expected in Week 1. They defeated the Temple Owls by a score of 51-3, dominating arguably the worst team in college football in every facet of the game. After a strong start from Oklahoma's new starting quarterback in that contest, the Sooners will hope for another excellent offensive showing to move to 2-0 on the young season.
Jackson Arnold threw for 141 yards and four touchdowns for Oklahoma in their blowout win over Temple. He wasn't called upon to many any daring throws or anything, averaging a modest 5.6 yards per pass attempt. But his precision with the ball was excellent, especially within scoring range, which should once again be good enough to help Oklahoma beat an overmatched non-conference foe.
Houston vs Oklahoma Best Bet
This Houston vs Oklahoma game feels like a total mismatch in Week 2. Houston's offense was scary bad in their season opener and there is very little reason to believe that will change this week against an Oklahoma team with a much better defense than that of UNLV. Look for the Sooners to cover the spread in this game and to improve to 2-0 before their schedule gets more interesting in the weeks to follow.
