- The Sun are 5-0 straight up but they are just 1-4 against the spread early in the season.
- The guards of the Mercury should give them a path to win this game outright, even if the Sun will hammer Phoenix in the paint.
Diana Taurasi became a star in the game of basketball at the University of Connecticut. Tonight, she comes back to Connecticut as a member of the Phoenix Mercury, to take on the Connecticut Sun. Here, we give you our WNBA betting picks for Mercury vs Sun, with the question always being whether or not this trip to Connecticut will be the last for Taurasi.
This game will be played at 7:00 PM ET at Mohegan Sun Arena on Tuesday, May 28, 2024.
Phoenix Mercury
The Phoenix Mercury are off to a decent start to their WNBA campaign in 2024. They are 3-2 both straight up and against the spread. And while they were blown out by the Dallas Wings in their last game, the Mercury clearly have the weapons to cause some problems for quality teams, as evidenced by their upset win over the Las Vegas Aces last week.
While Phoenix will struggle to defend the paint against the Sun, they should have an advantage from the perimeter in this matchup. Kahleah Copper has had an MVP-caliber start to this season for the Mercury, while shooters like Taurasi are a constant threat. If the Mercury can run up their advantage from the outside in this game, they could very well offset the edge the Sun possess on the inside.
Connecticut Sun
The Connecticut Sun are the only undefeated team remaining in the WNBA in 2024. They are 5-0 and have looked like the championship contender they were expected to be coming into this year. The defense of Connecticut has been key to their success as always and that defense will be tested once again in this Mercury vs Sun game against a dangerous Phoenix offense.
What should set Connecticut apart in this game is their ability to rebound the basketball. The Sun are one of just four teams in the WNBA averaging 10 or more offensive rebounds per game at this early stage of the season. They should be able to control the offensive glass and win this game, but a failure to defend the perimeter effectively could cause problems for the Sun if they are not diligent.
