Key Storylines
- The 49ers got a win in Week 1 on the road against the San Francisco 49ers. The Niners’ defense held Seattle to just 230 yards of offense and that gave their offense enough margin for error to grab the win late.
- New Orleans struggled in scoring range in their loss to the Arizona Cardinals. New Orleans went 1/4 on red zone opportunities and the lack of experience for quarterback Spencer Rattler did not help them in high-pressure situations. He will try to rebound here.
- Christian McCaffrey was listed as questionable entering Week 1 with a calf issue but he played and had 142 total yards. He looked good in that game and should be ready to compete in this contest as well.
- Saints left guard Trevor Penning and edge rusher Chase Young were ruled out for Week 1. Being without key players as an underdog this week could really hurt their chances of getting a victory.
- The Niners’ offense found a weapon in Ricky Pearsall. Pearsall had four catches for 108 yards in Week 1. While he is not as versatile a threat as Deebo Samuel was, Pearsall brings plenty to the table in his own right.
Quarterback Play
Brock Purdy completed 26 of his 35 pass attempts in Week 1. He threw for 277 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Taking care of the football will be so important for Purdy in this game as he can’t afford to give the Saints extra chances to score through turnovers.
Spencer Rattler earned the QB1 nod for the Saints in late August. He completed 27 of his 46 pass attempts in Week 1 and had 214 passing yards with no passing touchdowns against the Cardinals. Rattler had chances to tie the game down the stretch but wasn’t able to complete any of those throws. Rattler didn’t throw any interceptions in Week 1 and ball security could be the key to New Orleans keeping this game within reach.
Betting Trends & H2H
- The 49ers covered the spread on the road in Week 1 against Seattle.
- New Orleans did not cover the spread at home against Arizona.
- Both teams went under the total in their first games of the season.

Final Thoughts
San Francisco found a way to win in their first game of the season but I was not overly impressed with what we saw from them offensively. New Orleans won’t set the world on fire with its offense either, but I do think that the Saints can keep this game within a touchdown at home, as scary as backing Spencer Rattler may be.
