The 2025 Formula 1 season moves to the Hungaroring for the Hungarian Grand Prix Sunday. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri is coming off a win in the Belgian Grand Prix win and is firmly in the championship lead. But competitors like Lando Norris and Max Verstappen will lead the charge in trying to take Piastri down here. Hungarian Grand Prix Preview
Oscar Piastri won the Belgian Grand Prix last week. That victory moved him 16 points ahead of Lando Norris in the season standings. Piastri’s ability to execute in mixed conditions and manage tyre wear puts him in a prime position to contend at the Hungaroring as well. Norris remains dangerous and it looks like the two McLaren drivers are the most likely to come away with the win at this race.
Max Verstappen appears to be regaining form after a sprint race win last weekend. Verstappen could be a podium contender but winning on a circuit that demands downforce and chassis balance may be a stretch.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc has shown consistent speed and reliability this season. He has yet to convert that to multiple wins. Lewis Hamilton returns to a venue where he holds a record eight Hungarian GP wins and also owns the lap record from 2020. But Hamilton’s move to Ferrari has yet to yield a podium in 2025.
Mercedes has improved their tyre strategy and consistency in recent races. George Russell has emerged as a dark horse to win this race. But a victory for him would likely require some kind of catastrophe for the race favorites.

Hungarian Grand Prix Prediction
My pick for the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix is for Oscar Piastri to get the win. My reasons for that are as follows:
- Form and momentum: Piastri’s won in Belgium in his last race. His proven tyre management under mixed and hot track conditions gives him a competitive edge.
- Track characteristics: Hungaroring rewards low tyre degradation and consistent pace. Piastri excels in maintaining tyre life.
- Qualifying importance: Piastri has demonstrated strong one‑lap pace at McLaren. He has often finished ahead of Norris and Verstappen when it matters most.
Max Verstappen is a possibility for the podium in this race. But given Red Bull’s relative weakness and Hungaroring’s lack of overtaking zones, a win seems less likely to me. Charles Leclerc and Russell may place in the top three as well. But the outright winner market is likely to be won by one of the two McLaren drivers.
