The Detroit Tigers will visit the Seattle Mariners in Game 1 of the American League Division Series on Saturday night. The Tigers struggled before the postseason, but won in the AL Wild Card round over the Cleveland Guardians. Their reward is to face a Mariners team that has power bats all over their lineup. Here, I break down this Division Series opener and make my Tigers vs Mariners Game 1 prediction.

Key Storylines
Seattle earned a first-round bye by capturing the AL West and finishing with the American League’s best record. They will be well-rested and able to set their rotation as they like. Detroit came through the Wild Card round in three games. That required extra effort and has forced them to use some arms that they may have liked to use in this game.
Detroit is going to begin this game with Troy Melton taking the mound out of the bullpen. Melton has pitched once in the postseason, allowing four runs during a Game 2 rally against the Guardians. Building his confidence up would be huge for the Tigers early in this best-of-five series.
Seattle’s offensive strength is a major advantage going into Game 1. Catcher Cal Raleigh smashed 60 home runs in the regular season, breaking records for catchers and switch-hitters all at the same time. The Mariners also added midseason reinforcements like Eugenio Suárez and Josh Naylor to protect Raleigh in the lineup. Those moves paid off handsomely.
Detroit’s roster is less imposing on paper. Their offensive production has been uneven, especially down the stretch, and they don’t carry the same depth of high-impact bats. Their biggest asset is starting pitching, led by Tarik Skubal, who will pitch later in this series. But the Tigers were just 1-1 in the games Skubal didn’t start in the opening round.
Recent Team Streaks
Seattle ended the regular season with three straight losses to the Los Angeles Dodgers. But they had already sewn up the AL West by that point and will try to get back on track with more to play for here. The Tigers won two out of three games in the Wild Card round and have briefly recovered from their collapse at the end of the regular season.

Final Thoughts
My best bet for Game 1 of this series is for the Seattle Mariners to win and cover the runline at home. The Mariners are well-rested and much more consistent offensively. It may be some square action, but a Mariners runline + Cal Raleigh home run SGP should be on your Saturday betting card.
