Key Storylines
- UCF’s defense has been outstanding so far. They are allowing only about 8.5 points per game, ranking among the best nationally. But it is worth noting that those defensive results have come against one FCS team and one lower-level FBS opponent. This will be UCF’s biggest test of the season so far.
- UCF’s offense is averaging 42.5 points per game and racking up 491 total yards per game. They run the ball well and mix in the pass in effective ways. Tayven Jackson leads the way in the passing game while Myles Montgomery and Jaden Nixon provide balance on the ground.
- North Carolina is still finding their footing under Bill Belichick. They lost their opener badly to TCU, but have rebounded with wins over Charlotte and FCS opponent Richmond. Their offense is averaging 25 points per game but they were held to just 14 points at home against TCU in their only real test of the season so far.
Quarterback Play
Tayven Jackson has been solid for UCF. He hasn’t been required to throw the football much, but he has two touchdowns and no interceptions in the early stages of the Knights’ 2025 campaign. Continuing to avoid turnovers will be huge in this contest.
Gio Lopez is a transfer from South Alabama who brings dual-threat potential to the UNC offense. He’s shown flashes in recent games but still needs to prove he can consistently make big plays under pressure. His connection with receivers like Jordan Shipp is an asset, but blocking and offensive line play are not yet where they need to be to help him maximize his potential.

Final Thoughts
UCF has more momentum, has played well defensively, and has looked more efficient on offense in their first two games. While North Carolina has improved since their opener, they have only looked better by playing against inferior competition. This feels like a spot where UCF covers the number and I’ll lay the points with the Knights.
