Key Storylines
- Turnovers and ball security will likely determine the outcome of this game. Pitt’s Eli Holstein has been turnover-prone this year. BC’s ability to force mistakes could swing momentum in the Eagles’ favor.
- Boston College’s ground attack has been solid so far this year. Running back Turbo Richard is averaging over 80 yards per game on the ground. BC will need Richard and the rest of their backs to make plays on the ground to keep the ball away from Holstein the the Pitt passing attack.
- Pitt’s defense under Pat Narduzzi has struggled over its last two games. They have allowed 32.5 points per game in losses to West Virginia and Louisville. Patching things up on that side of the ball will be a huge key for the Panthers.
- Both of these teams come into this game on losing streaks. Boston College has dropped its last three games and is 0-2 in ACC play early on. Pitt has also dropped two in a row, including its conference opener to Louisville at home last week.
Quarterback Play
Pitt’s Eli Holstein has major arm talent. He has 1,050 passing yards and 11 touchdowns. But he has also thrown five interceptions in four games. His deep passing ability is a weapon, but consistency and decision-making remain concerns coming into this matchup.
BC signal caller Dylan Lonergan is averaging 40 pass attempts per game so far this season. He has nine touchdown passes and three interceptions, but will be looking for the running game to carry more of the offensive burden for his team to set him up for more success.
Betting Trends
- Both of these teams are 2-2 against the spread so far this season.
- These teams have both seen three of their first four games this season go over their totals.

Final Thoughts
Both teams are struggling heading into this matchup. But I think that the Pitt Panthers are the team best equipped to overcome those struggles this week. The Panthers have a more dangerous passing attack and Narduzzi’s defense should take advantage of the one-dimensional nature of BC’s offense given how often they throw the ball. I’ll take the Panthers to cover the spread at home in this battle of struggling ACC opponents.
