Toronto Argonauts vs Montreal Alouettes Preview
Quarterbacks
Toronto’s offense is supposed to be led by Chad Kelly, who returns this year after a nine-game suspension in 2024. But it looks like we will see backup quarterback Nick Arbuckle in this game, as Kelly is not expected to play in the opener due to a leg injury he suffered in the East Division final against this same Alouettes team.
Montreal comes into this season with an interesting quarterback situation. They traded Cody Fajardo in the offseason, sending him to the Edmonton Elks in exchange for McLeod Bethel-Thompson. Bethel-Thompson has experience in the CFL and USFL and we could see him start this week. But he could be on a short leash with several younger quarterbacks behind him on the depth chart.
Skill Positions
The Argonauts come into this season with just two running backs on their active roster after the release of Ka’Deem Carey. Miyan Williams out of Ohio State and Deonta McMahon are those two running backs. The two of them have yet to see much action in the CFL, with McMahon set to see an increase in his role in 2025.
Montreal’s offense also features a high-profile release at running back. Walter Fletcher was expected to step into the starting running back role after William Stanback’s departure. But with him gone, the bulk of the backfield touches are now up for grabs, starting with this season-opening game.

Toronto Argonauts vs Montreal Alouettes Prediction
This season opener features two well-matched teams with high-powered offenses and aggressive defenses. There are questions offensively on both sides, as both teams will look to overcome the losses of key backs while the Argos are aiming to overcome more difficulties at quarterback. Because of those problems on both sides, we anticipate a low-scoring game here as both teams look to get on the same page offensively.
The Pick: Under 47.5. Predicted score: Toronto Argonauts 21, Montreal Alouettes 24.
