- Usyk finished much stronger than Fury in their first fight and his superior gas tank will serve him well in this rematch.
- Usyk has a win over Fury and two wins over Anthony Joshua in his last four fights and he will continue to dominate his competition here.
In the world of boxing, it is sometimes hard for the rematch of a fight to be better than the first meeting between to fighters. But that might not be the case in Saudi Arabia in December as Oleksandr Usyk faces off with Tyson Fury in a rematch of their undisputed heavyweight title fight won by Usyk in May. Both men will be looking to prove something in the ring in this bout and here we break down Usyk vs Fury II in what should be another great matchup between these men.
Oleksandr Usyk
In the first fight between Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury, Usyk used the later rounds to claim the fight for himself. He simply outlasted Fury, teeing off on the Gypsy King down the stretch to grab a split decision win in which he landed just 13 more punches than his opponent. Here, Usyk will look to prove that he deserved that decision and that he is the better fighter between these two by claiming a second straight win over Fury.
What was so impressive about Usyk’s performance in the first meeting between these men was how much more efficient he was with his punches than Fury. Usyk threw 89 fewer punches than his opponent but landed more punches over the course of the fight. That efficiency would certainly come in handy for the Ukranian in this rematch, as it would allow him to conserve some energy for the later rounds where he can really do some damage to a potentially exhausted Fury.
Tyson Fury
Tyson Fury suffered the first loss of his career in the first matchup between himself and Usyk in Riyadh back in May. Things were going well for Fury in the first half of that fight, but by the ninth round, it appeared clear that Usyk was in control as Fury wasn’t able to keep up with him late in the bout. This time around, Fury will need to deliver a more consistent performance across 12 rounds if he wants to get his win back in Usyk vs Fury II.
Of course, one could argue that Fury has actually lost two fights in a row coming into this rematch with Usyk. There is a legitimate case to be made that Francis Ngannou got the better of Fury in their boxing match, despite Ngannou never having participated in a pro boxing bout before that fight. Fury was knocked down in that fight with Ngannou and nearly went down against Usyk as well, with the question being how he will respond to the recent adversity in his career in this rematch.
