Jake Paul vs Gervonta Davis Preview
Jake Paul is 12-1 in his boxing career and has added two big names to his list of career wins in his last two fights. He beat Mike Tyson and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in his last two bouts. Those two fighters were generations past their prime. But this fight will be Paul’s first chance to prove himself as a real fighter against a respectable opponent.
Gervonta Davis is the reigning WBA lightweight champion and is 30-0-1 in his boxing career. He most recently fought to a draw against Lamont Roach Jr. in March. The key detail for Davis in this non-title fight is the weight difference. That weight difference could derail him for the first time as a professional boxer.
There is always a catch when it comes to Jake Paul fights. That has usually come in the form of Paul fighting against former MMA fighters or extremely washed-up boxers like Tyson. This time it comes in the form of his size advantage. Paul typically competes as a cruiserweight or heavyweight. Davis usually competes at 155 pounds. There isn’t a world where Davis can put on enough weight and Paul to cut enough weight to level that playing field.
The question is whether or not the expected size difference will matter. Davis is a technician who has taken apart legitimate boxers like Frank Martin and Ryan Garcia. He might not need to be as big as Paul to defend against him and deal out damage.
Jake Paul vs Gervonta Davis Betting Odds
Official odds have not been released at legal US sportsbooks. That likely won’t happen until more details are announced, such as the weight rules. But less reputable operators, who we don’t recommend using, have Davis at -180 and Paul at +140 to win this fight. This pricing reflects the fact that Davis is a far superior technician and a more experienced fighter. But they also reflect the fact that Paul is much bigger than Davis and will probably outweigh him by a substantial amount when this fight takes place.
Jake Paul vs Tank Davis Prediction
There is certainly a physical mismatch for Gervonta Davis to overcome in this fight against an opponent who is simply a larger human. But there will also be a physical advantage for Davis in the form of his gas tank and the fact that he has actually fought in deep waters against serious boxing competition before.
As long as we don’t see some sort of chicanery in this fight, like Davis showing up out of shape, he should be able to use his superior movement and ring intelligence to get the win. I’ll take Davis by decision as the size difference could help Paul avoid being knocked out. But from a betting standpoint, I think this could be like the McGregor vs Mayweather fight, where the actual boxer is a great bet at a price that should be steeper.
We’ll update this post with more betting thoughts once odds are available at legal shops.
