- This is the second leg of a back-to-back for the Mercury, which should negatively impact them against a Sun team with an elite defense.
- Connecticut has lost two of its last three games, but two of those losses came against elite teams in the Storm and Aces.
The Phoenix Mercury are playing for the second night in a row when they face off with the Connecticut Sun on Monday night in Phoenix. So far this year, the Mercury have been very good on their home floor, but they are coming off of a loss there just yesterday and will look to rebound from that in this spot. This game will be played at Footprint Center at 10:00 PM ET on Monday, July 1, 2024.
Connecticut Sun
So far this season, the Connecticut Sun are 14-4, which is good for second in the WNBA standings. They have fallen on some hard times of late, though, at least by their standards. Having lost three of their last four games heading into Monday’s Sun vs Mercury clash, Stephanie White’s team will aim to turn things around and get back into the win column here.
For the Sun to get a win in this matchup, they are going to need to find some consistency across 40 minutes on the offensive end of the floor. The Sun have been held to 75 or fewer points in three of their last four games, losing all three of the games where they were held to that mark. Fortunately for Connecticut, Phoenix is not exactly known for their defense, ranking in the bottom-four in points per game allowed at 84.8 points per contest.
Phoenix Mercury
On Sunday, the Phoenix Mercury welcomed Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever into town for a nationally televised matchup. Things were going well for the Mercury, who led that game by double-digits in the second half. But Phoenix could not hold onto their sizable lead, falling apart in the fourth quarter to lose what was an emotional game that garnered a lot of attention thanks to the comments made by Diana Taurasi about Clark’s initial transition into professional basketball.
Now, the Mercury are tasked with suiting up and playing just one day after that loss against one of the best teams in the WNBA in the Sun. Phoenix may have the best individual interior player in this game in Brittney Griner and the best individual perimeter player in Kahleah Copper. But what makes the Sun so dangerous is how well-connected they stay defensively, which could still cause problems for the Mercury on the offensive end of the floor.
