Odds from FanDuel Sportsbook
There are two clear favorites to win the Olympic women’s 100m breaststroke event. China’s Tang Qianting and South Africa’s Tatjana Smith are considered a cut above the rest in the eyes of oddsmakers going into this race. Qianting won the world championship in this distance in Doha in 2024, while Smith won silver in this race during the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, setting up quite the showdown between the two here in Paris.
Olympic Women’s 100m Breaststroke Major Storylines
The showdown between Qianting and Smith is the top storyline going into the Paris Olympics in the women’s 100m breaststroke. Smith did not participate in the 2024 World Aquatics Championships in Doha, when Qianting won gold. This will be one fo the first chances for that duo to compete against one another on a major international stage, which should result in plenty of intrigue as far as the final result is concerned.
How Lily King of the United States performs will also be a huge storyline to watch in this event. King set the world record in this distance and discipline all the way back in 2017, a record that has not been broken in seven years. But that was a long time ago and King is not expected to contend for gold here at age 27, though we have certainly seen more surprising things in the Olympic pool.
Olympic Women’s 100m Breaststroke Medal Contenders
We are expecting the top-three in the women’s 100m breaststroke to be Qianting, Smith, and King. What order those three swimmers come in remains to be seen, but it is unlikely that anyone crashes the podium from outside of that group. If anyone was to do so, Benedetta Pilato of Italy could be the one to do it, though it would take a combination of a great race from her and a drop-off from one of the three favorites for that to take place.
Women’s 100m Breaststroke Betting Prediction: Tatjana Smith (+150)
The Olympic women’s 100m breaststroke should come down to Qianting and Smith, with both inside of +200 to come away with the gold. We will take Smith to get the job done at a slightly better price than Qianting, as there is not much to separate either of them going into the Olympic Games. Look for the South African to win what should be a tight race in the final on Monday.
