Going into the Olympic men’s long jump final, there are five men all inside of +600 to win the gold medal. The aforementioned Barshim and Tamberi are among those five men, along with favorite of New Zealand, Shelby McEwan of the United States, and Sang-Hyeok Woo of South Korea. While Kerr is the favorite to win this competition, anyone can realistically come out on top from this group with the Olympic gold medal on the line.
Olympic Men’s High Jump Major Storylines
The rematch between Tamberi and Barshim is one of the biggest storylines of the entire Paris track and field meet after their memorable moment at the Tokyo Games. But an injury to Barshim could make it tougher than usual for him to have a great performance here. We did see Barshim tie for the second-best qualifying height in the semifinals of this competition, which is an encouraging sign, but time will tell how he performs in the final.
Then there is the story of Hamish Kerr, who is the favorite despite having limited experience in major international competitions. Kerr did win gold in the high jump at the 2024 World Indoor Championships but he has not done much in major outdoor competition, finishing 10th in the last Olympics. He did have the best qualifying height, though, and is clearly a force to be reckoned with here.
Olympic Men’s High Jump Medal Contenders
You can pick from any of the five aforementioned jumpers and make a case for any of them to win a medal in the Olympic men’s high jump. While Tamberi and Barshim will be the sentimental picks to come out on top here, they could very well fall behind Kerr, McEwan, or Woo here. Romaine Beckford was also impressive in qualifying, though he could struggle as the favorites turn up the heat in the final.
