The favorite to win the Olympic men’s 800m final is Djamel Sedjati of Algeria. Sedjati is running at an elite level in the 800, as he is one of the three fastest men ever to run this distance. He completed the 800 in 1:41.46 in Monaco back in early July and he appears to be a real threat to come away with the gold medal here. There are just two other men inside of +500 to win the gold medal in this event, Emmanuel Wanyonyi of Kenya and Gabriel Tual of France.
Olympic Men’s 800m Major Storylines
Whether Sadjati can challenge the world record in this event is a huge storyline going into the men’s 800m final. The Algerian is within .35 seconds of that mark, which was set during the 2012 Olympics by David Rushida of Kenya. With Sadjati improving his time on a consistent basis in recent runs, we could see him do that again and set a new world record on the biggest stage in track and field.
Gabriel Tual is also a huge storyline going into this event, as he is running on home soil while representing France here. Tual finished seventh in the 800m final in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 but he has improved since then and could grab a medal for France if he puts forth a strong effort on the track in this race.

Sadjati, Wanyonyi, and Tual are the top-three contenders to take home a medal in the Olympic men’s 800m final.
