Key Storylines
- Coaching subplot: This is Ben Johnson’s first trip back to Detroit as Bears head coach after coordinating the Lions’ top-scoring unit in 2024.
- Lions staff changes: John Morton has over Detroit’s offense and Kelvin Sheppard now runs the defense. Neither side of the ball was good enough in Week 1 against the Green Bay Packers
- Chicago is coming off a short prep week in this game. Their Week 1 game came on Monday Night Football against the Minnesota Vikings.
- This is the second opportunity for both of these teams to get a division win as both teams have division matchups in Weeks 1 and 2.
Quarterback Play
Jared Goff was disappointing in the Lions’ season-opening loss to the Green Bay Packers. He was held to 225 passing yards and the Lions were held to just 13 points as a team. Goff has to be more effective through the air for the Lions to avoid an 0-2 start and become the subject of speculation that their coordinators were the real driver of last year’s success.
Caleb Williams is in his second year as the quarterback of the Chicago Bears. The raw numbers from last season showed promise in spite of some growing pains. Williams had 3,541 yards, 20 touchdowns, and six interceptions a season ago. In his second game of this season he will try to move the ball effectively through the air the way Jayden Daniels did in the Lions’ last game of last season and Jordan Love did in Week 1 against Detroit.
Betting Trends & H2H
- Detroit failed to cover the spread in their first game of the 2025 season.
- Detroit’s first game of the year went under the total.
- Detroit was 7-2 during the regular season last year. This is their 2025 home opener.
- Chicago was 1-7 on the road last season and this will be their first road game of this year.
Bears vs Lions Model Projection
Score Projection: Bears 23 – Lions 28
Win Probability: Bears 34%, Lions 66%
Final Thoughts
The Detroit Lions should look a lot better this week than they did in Week 1 against Green Bay. Detroit is at home, where they played so well last season. They also won’t have to try (and fail) to protect Jared Goff from Micah Parsons this week. Expect the Lions to roar back from their season-opening loss and to cover the spread against a Bears team on a short prep week.
