Jamahal Hill vs Glover Texeira serves as the main event for UFC 283, and will crown a new light heavyweight champion. This fight came together after former champ Texeira was passed over, and Jan Blachowicz and Magomed Ankalaev put on a dud resulting in a draw at UFC 282. That resulted in the UFC making this fight before the previous combatants even left the cage. The grizzled vet Teixeira continues to be passed over by oddsmakers, with Hill set as a -135 favorite. Glover Teixeira vs Jamahal Hill Fight Preview
This fight will be one of two things. The first could be a changing of the guard and a brand new champ at light heavyweight, and perhaps be the last fight of Teixeira’s career at 43 years old. The other, but more likely outcome is Teixeira becomes a two time and extends his career a bit, with Hill getting too much just a bit too soon.
Hill will be the longer and more dynamic striker. That is not really an arguable statement. Teixeira however has seen his striking approach elite levels, and certainly showed that off in his most recent fight with Jiri Prochazka. Teixeira has talked about how he has learned to literally roll with the shots he takes, and how it allows him to stay in there when being hit by powerful strikers. He also has an uncanny knack for taking a big shot, being momentarily removed from consciousness and coming to and immediately snatching up a finish. It is truly a one of a kind trait that he has shown off more than once.
Teixeira will not be completely out of his element in the stand up, but he will also not do well to participate in a 25 minute kickboxing bout with Hill. His path of least resistance is on the floor, and he will have quite a large edge in the wrestling and grappling realms. On two separate occasions in seven UFC fights, Hill has been taken down six times. He also has a loss to Paul Craig that is in the record books as a TKO, but was the result of an armbar dislocation. This is despite never fighting a fighter with the ability to strike and wrestle like Teixeira, while also possessing world class BJJ.
Teixeira will be smart to get this fight to the mat early and often. While Hill has shown a strong ability to return to his feet once taken down, he has also never had to deal with the smothering control of someone like Teixeira. I believe this fight is decided on the mat and not the stand up, and Teixeira is in a great spot to reclaim his belt, and in his native Brazil no less. Take the +115 value in this main event.
