Key Storylines
- This is a phenomenal starting pitching matchup. Texas’ Jacob deGrom has been dominant, going 9-2 with a 2.13 ERA. He hasn’t lost a start since the end of May and will look to keep dealing here.
- Yusei Kikuchi has been very good, with a 2.81 ERA on the year. But the Angels have not given him enough support, as his 3-6 record doesn’t accurately depict his All-Star level of pitching for the season.
Bullpen usage
The battle of the bullpens should go the way of the Rangers in this series. They rank fourth in bullpen ERA this season, while the Angels are 27th out of 30 teams. Both starters could go deep into this game, though, negating that advantage for Texas for at least one night.
Recent team streaks
- Texas dropped two out of three to the Padres in their most recent series.
- The Angels were just swept over three games by the Toronto Blue Jays and are 1-4 in their last five games.
Betting Trends & H2H
- The Rangers hold a 3-0 lead in the season series this year, sweeping the Angels back in April.
- Texas has won each of the last six games that deGrom has started for them.
- The Angels have covered the runline in 55.1% of their games this year. That percentage is good for fourth in MLB.
- Texas has gone under the total in 64% of their games, the highest percentage of unders in MLB.
Rangers vs Angels Model Projection
Score Projection: Rangers 4 – Angels 3
Win Probability: Rangers 55% • Angels 45%
Final Thoughts
My favorite bet for this AL West matchup on Monday night is for the game to stay under the total of 7.5 runs. Both starting pitchers in this game are All-Stars, and we could see either one of them outduel the other. Instead of backing one side or the other to get a win, the safer play is to back the under, as I don’t expect much scoring for either team until the very late stages.
