Game Snapshot

  • Matchup: Washington State Cougars vs North Texas Mean Green
  • Date & Time: Saturday, September 13, 3:30 PM ET
  • Venue: DATCU Stadium, Denton, TX
  • Broadcast: ESPNU

Key Storylines

  • Both of these teams are 2-0 on the season and a win here would put them in a great spot to secure bowl eligibility as the season goes along.
  • This is the first road game of the year for Washington State and they will have to prove themselves in a hostile environment in front of what should be a lively crowd given the opportunity in front of North Texas.
  • Both quarterbacks in this matchup have yet to throw an interception this season and continuing to play clean football will be key in this game.

Quarterback Play

Washington State’s Jaxon Potter has thrown four touchdown passes with no interceptions to begin the year. He had a very good game against San Diego State last week. Potter threw for 257 yards through the air and had three touchdowns in that matchup. Another good game from Potter could help his team get off to a 3-0 start to the year.

North Texas is off to a great start with Drew Mestemaker. He has 553 passing yards, five touchdowns, and no interceptions to start the season. This is the toughest test that Mestemaker has seen so far this year. But he played well on the road against Western Michigan last week and that is an encouraging sign as the Mean Green return home here.

  • North Texas went 1-1 against the spread through their first two weeks.
  • Washington State is also 1-1 against the spread this year.
  • Both teams are 1-1 in the over/under market so far this year.

Washington State vs North Texas Model Projection

Score Projection: North Texas 35 – Washington State 27

Win Probability: North Texas 56% – Washington State 44%

Final Thoughts

I think we are in for a fun matchup between these two teams. Both quarterbacks are operating at a high level and we should see some offensive production on both sides. But I am going to go with North Texas to win this game and cover the spread as a home favorite. The Mean Green have a more well-rounded offense and that should help them to separate themselves in the second half to move to 3-0 and start to turn some heads in the college football landscape.
