Key Storylines
- Virginia Tech’s Struggles: The Hokies have started the season 0-2. They took a 44-20 loss to Vanderbilt and a 24-11 loss to South Carolina. The Hokies were outscored 34-0 in the second half against Vandy and they will try to get their first win of the year against their first opponent of the year from outside the SEC.
- Old Dominion’s Offensive Surge: The Monarchs are coming off a dominant 54-6 victory over North Carolina Central of the FCS. They had a potent offense led by quarterback Colton Joseph and running back Trequan Jones against NC Central. But they have yet to look that good against FBS competition and are not expected to in this game either.
- Quarterback Play: Both teams rely heavily on their quarterbacks. Joseph has thrown for 353 yards and three touchdowns this season. Kyron Drones of Virginia Tech has 355 passing yards and one touchdown, but with two interceptions. Drones has only completed half of his passes so far this year and that is a major red flag with ACC play not far from now.

I think that we are going to see a much better version of Virginia Tech than we did in their first two games of the season against power conference competition. Kyron Drones will be facing a defense that isn’t from the SEC for the first time this season. That should mean better than a 50% completion rate in this game. I’ll take Virginia Tech to cover the spread as a home favorite in this matchup with the Monarchs.
