Key Storylines
- Quarterback Play: Iowa quarterback Mark Gronowski has been effective on the ground with 289 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns. But his passing game has struggled, throwing only three touchdowns to four interceptions. Minnesota’s redshirt freshman quarterback, Drake Lindsay, has thrown for 1,437 yards and 10 touchdowns this season. Minnesota is better at moving the ball through the air, but Gronowski’s ability to run the ball could be a weapon that helps Iowa win this game.
- Defensive Strengths: Iowa has a stout defense, ranking fifth in run defense and eighth in scoring defense nationally. Minnesota’s defense has been solid, allowing just 19 points per game and ranking inside the Top 20 nationally in total defense. One of these teams have to solve the opposing defense to win this matchup.
- Home Field Advantage: Iowa has historically performed well at Kinnick Stadium, which could provide an edge in this rivalry game. The Golden Gophers nearly beat Indiana at home earlier this season, in a game that looks more impressive as Indiana continues to dominate other opponents.

Final Thoughts
As usual, I think we are in for a low-scoring football game between the Iowa Hawkeyes and an opponent from the Big Ten. I do expect Iowa to win this game on their home field. But I’m going to take the points with Minnesota in this game, as I don’t feel quite right laying more than a touchdown with an Iowa team that isn’t likely to put up a ton of points.
