Key Storylines
- Michigan’s true freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood impressed in his debut win over New Mexico. But this will be his first real test against a good team.
- Oklahoma’s John Mateer lit up Illinois State in his first game with the Sooners. This will also be his first real test as the starter in Norman.
- Both defenses will face their first real test against a legitimate Power Five opponent after easy Week 1 victories.
- ESPN’s College GameDay will be at this game. That is further proof that this is the biggest game of the week in college football.
Quarterback Play
All eyes are on the quarterbacks in this contest. Michigan’s Bryce Underwood made history as the first Wolverines freshman to throw for more than 250 yards in his debut. He looks like an immediate upgrade over the quarterbacks the Wolverines had a season ago.
Oklahoma’s John Mateer put on a clinic against Illinois State with nearly 400 passing yards. That was only a game against an FCS opponent but it was encouraging for OU nonetheless. This head-to-head is one of the most intriguing quarterback duels of the weekend and whoever protects the football better will likely decide the outcome.
Betting Trends & H2H
- Both teams failed to cover the spread in their wins over inferior opponents.
- Michigan went over the total in their first game. Oklahoma went under the total against Illinois State.
- This will be the first meeting between Michigan and Oklahoma since 1976. Oklahoma won that game 14-6 in the Orange Bowl.
Michigan vs Oklahoma Model Projection
- Score Projection: Oklahoma 24 – Michigan 20
- Win Probability: Oklahoma 63%, Michigan 37%
Final Thoughts
I am very interested to see how both of these quarterbacks will perform in their first real tests with their current teams. I think we will see both Underwood and Mateer struggle against good defenses in this contest. Look for the under to cash in this contest, as Michigan’s defense should make life tough on Mateer and Oklahoma’s defense and the home crowd should give Underwood a proper welcome to big-time college football.
