Key Storylines
- Indiana’s Offensive Balance & Momentum: Indiana is strong through both the air and on the ground. Quarterback Fernando Mendoza has been sharp, and their rushing attack has posted impressive numbers through Kaelon Black. They scored 63 points in their latest win over Illinois and will look to prove themselves offensively again in this contest.
- Iowa’s Rushing Strength vs Passing Weakness: Iowa leans heavily on the run game. They have averaged roughly 4.7 yards per carry and accumulated over 800 rushing yards already this season. But their passing numbers are modest. Mark Gronowski has thrown three touchdowns and one interception so far, and his lack of passing success could hurt the chances of the Hawkeyes in this matchup.
- Defensive Turnovers & Pressure: Indiana’s defense has made big noise recently, especially against Illinois. Iowa has also been terrific on defense, as has become customary under Kirk Ferentz. They will try to pass their biggest test of the season so far on that side of the ball against Indiana.
- Home Field Advantage: Iowa is at home and they have one of the best home-field advantages in college football. This is the first road game of the season for Indiana and we will see how they handle playing in hostile territory here.
Quarterback Play
- Fernando Mendoza: Mendoza has 14 touchdown passes and he has yet to throw an interception so far this season. He has been spectacular and will try to continue playing at a high level against one of the best defensive programs in the recent history of college football.
- Mark Gronowski: Gronowski has not been asked to carry a heavy passing burden for Iowa. His rushing ability adds value to the Hawkeyes’ offense. But the passing game will need to be better to keep pace with the Hoosiers.

Final Thoughts
Indiana was incredibly impressive last week against Illinois last week. The Hoosiers won’t look that good offensively again this week, but they should do enough to get the win and cover the spread on the road here. Mendoza will be the better of the two quarterbacks in this matchup and that should ultimately be the difference maker in this Big Ten contest.
