Key Storylines
- Army’s Offensive Identity: Army continues to rely on its time-consuming, run-heavy option offense. They lead the nation in time of possession and rushing attempts per game. But they haven’t been quite as effective this season as they were last year when they won the AAC title behind the strength of that unique offensive style.
- Tulane’s Defensive Strengths: Tulane’s defense has been opportunistic this season. They have been forcing turnovers and stopping fourth-down conversions effectively. Their ability to disrupt opposing offenses will be crucial against Army’s ground game. Maintaining gap discipline is the key on defense against the Black Knights.
- Quarterback Play: Army’s quarterback Cale Hellums isn’t asked to throw the football much. But he does lead the team in rushing and has eight rushing touchdowns going into this weekend’s action. Tulane’s Jake Retzlaff leads the Green Wave in both passing and rushing yards, combining for just over 1,500 yards through the air and on the ground. He has 11 total touchdowns entering this game.
- Revenge Angle: This doesn’t matter much in the context of betting this game, but Tulane will likely want to avenge their loss to Army in last year’s AAC title game. Tulane was crushed at the point of attack in that contest and will need to be better in the trenches to win this week.
Betting Trends & H2H
- Army’s Recent Performance: Army is 2-3-1 against the spread this season. They have won two straight games against Charlotte and UAB, but those are largely considered to be the two worst teams in the AAC this season.
- Tulane’s Recent Form: Tulane is 3-2-1 against the spread through the first half of their season. The Green Wave have had four of their first six games stay under their totals.
- Head-to-Head: In their last meeting, Army defeated Tulane 35-14 in the 2024 American Conference Championship Game. Tulane is 13-10-1 all-time against Army.

Final Thoughts
Even if you put aside the revenge angle for this game, I still think that Tulane has a huge edge going into this matchup. The Green Wave are much more capable of moving the ball on offense and should be better against Army’s option attack at home than they were on the road in last year’s AAC championship. I’ll lay the points with the Green Wave on Saturday.
