AFC West Futures: Who Will Win the AFC West This Year?

The AFC West is a division with a three-team race between teams that look difficult to separate. Denver is defending a division title after a 14-win season, Los Angeles is coming off an 11-win campaign, and Kansas City is being priced for a rebound despite finishing well below expectations last year. Polymarket gives those three clubs similar standing, while Las Vegas remains a clear long shot. Here, we break down the AFC West futures market and make our prediction for this year out West.
Denver has a convincing case to be considered the best team in the division. The Broncos went 14-3 last season, won the AFC West, and came within one game of reaching the Super Bowl. Most of that roster remains intact. Bo Nix is back after recovering from the ankle injury he suffered during the playoffs, and Denver gave him another major weapon by acquiring Jaylen Waddle to play alongside Courtland Sutton.
That move addresses one of the offense's biggest weaknesses from last season. Denver struggled to create enough explosive gains, with Nix averaging 6.4 yards per attempt. Waddle should make defenses defend more of the field and could open easier opportunities for Sutton and the rest of the receiving group.
Polymarket is treating Denver as essentially even with Kansas City at the top of the division race. That looks reasonable, although there is an argument that the Broncos should be the favorite based on roster continuity and last season's performance. Their opening schedule is difficult, so the first several weeks could test that quickly.
The Chargers finished 11-6 last season and remain close enough to Denver and Kansas City in the market that they cannot be viewed as a distant third choice. Justin Herbert gives Los Angeles a quarterback capable of winning this division, and one of the most significant offseason changes was the arrival of Mike McDaniel as offensive coordinator after Jim Harbaugh moved on from Greg Roman.
Herbert was sacked 54 times last season while dealing with major injuries across the offensive line. Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt are back, while Cole Strange was added to a group that should offer Herbert considerably better protection. If McDaniel can combine that improved line with Herbert, Omarion Hampton, and a deeper collection of receiving options, the Chargers may have a higher offensive ceiling than they showed last year.
Kansas City's standing is fascinating because the market is giving considerable weight to the franchise's history rather than simply reacting to last season. The Chiefs finished 6-11 in 2025 after winning the AFC West for nine consecutive seasons before Denver finally ended that run. A late-season knee injury to Patrick Mahomes made a disappointing year even worse, but Mahomes is able to play this season.
Mahomes' health remains the biggest question mark in the entire division. Mahomes tore his ACL and LCL late last season, and there is a difference between being medically cleared to play and immediately returning to peak form. Kansas City also rebuilt much of its cornerback group after moving Trent McDuffie and losing Jaylen Watson. Steve Spagnuolo has consistently found answers on defense, but this version of the roster features more uncertainty on that side of the ball than some previous Chiefs teams.
Las Vegas is approaching 2026 from a completely different position than the rest of the AFC West. The Raiders finished 3-14 last season and now begin a new era under head coach Klint Kubiak. They selected Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 pick in the draft after his undefeated national championship season at Indiana, but Kirk Cousins was named the starting quarterback.
The decision to begin with Cousins gives Las Vegas a veteran option while Mendoza develops, and the roster has more talent than its market standing might suggest. Ashton Jeanty and Brock Bowers are high-end pieces on offense, while Maxx Crosby remains the centerpiece of a defense that added Nakobe Dean, Quay Walker, Taron Johnson, and Kwity Paye. There is a path to substantial improvement from last year's record.
Making a choice in the AFC West comes down to Denver's continuity, Kansas City's rebound potential, and the Chargers' offensive upside. Kansas City deserves respect as long as Mahomes and Reid are together, but the quarterback's recovery adds an unusual amount of uncertainty to a team coming off a 6-win season. Los Angeles is dangerous, yet Denver enters with the clearest combination of proven recent results and roster stability.
Denver is my prediction to win the AFC West. The Broncos already demonstrated last season that they can finish ahead of the Chiefs and Chargers, then added Waddle to an offense that had obvious room to improve. If Nix stays healthy and Denver remains anywhere close to last year's defensive level, the Broncos have the look of a team capable of repeating.
