The NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year race does not have a runaway leader at this point in the year. Pass rushers occupy 2 of the top spots in the market, but elite defensive backs and linebackers are also close enough to change the picture quickly once the regular season gets into full swing. Draft status, immediate playing time, and opportunities to create sacks or turnovers will drive the race from here.
Polymarket currently has Rueben Bain Jr. and David Bailey at the front of the market. The separation between those 2 is modest, while Arvell Reese sits within striking distance as the leading name from the next group of contenders. Sonny Styles, Caleb Downs, and Mansoor Delane complete the top 6. The pricing suggests traders see several realistic paths to winning the award.
That distribution makes sense for an award that often rewards rookies who produce visible impact statistics. Edge rushers have a historical advantage because sacks are easy for voters to identify, while defensive backs usually need interceptions and other high-profile plays to overcome that positional bias. Five of the previous 7 winners entering 2026 were edge rushers, and 84% of the past 45 winners were top-20 draft selections.
Bain has an ideal combination of opportunity and positional value for this race. Tampa Bay has already listed the first-round pick as a starting outside linebacker, giving him a clear path to snaps immediately. His ability to win with strength while also working around the edge gives him several ways to generate sacks and tackles for loss.
Bailey might have the highest statistical ceiling in the field. The Jets selected him No. 2 overall after he led the nation with 14.5 sacks in his final college season at Texas Tech. He is expected to be a major piece of New York's pass rush, and reports from camp consistently pointed to his speed, power, and ability to disrupt plays behind the line. If Bailey approaches double-digit sacks as a rookie, he will be extremely difficult for other candidates to beat.
Reese could become one of the most active rookies in this class and reward those who make their NFL predictions backing him to win this award. The Giants selected him No. 5 overall and plan to use him primarily as an off-ball linebacker while moving him around when needed. He recorded 69 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and 6.5 sacks during his final Ohio State season. The concern is whether his role produces enough sacks or turnovers to separate him from the field.
Dallas is expected to use the rookie safety in several roles, and his versatility could keep him on the field for nearly every defensive snap. His training camp performance generated strong reviews, and his ability to cover, tackle, and create turnovers gives him multiple routes to an impressive statistical season. History works against him because no safety has won this award since 1990, but Downs has the talent and expected workload to threaten that trend.
Styles enters the year as an intriguing candidate because Washington can use his athleticism in several ways. He has already been trusted with communication responsibilities in the defense, an encouraging sign for his early workload. However, Washington's depth chart lists him behind Frankie Luvu, creating more uncertainty about immediate snap volume than the leading candidates face.
Delane is the highest-drafted cornerback among the leading candidates after Kansas City selected him No. 6 overall. His preseason performance was encouraging, particularly in coverage and tackling, and his first-round status should create opportunities early. Cornerbacks face a difficult path in this award because quarterbacks can simply avoid throwing at an effective cover man. Delane may need several interceptions and highly visible performances to move ahead of productive pass rushers.
Rueben Bain Jr. is my prediction to win Defensive Rookie of the Year. Bailey may have the greater pure sack ceiling, while Downs could ultimately become the best all-around player in the class, but Bain has the best combination of role, opportunity, team context, and award-friendly production.
