NFC South Futures: Who Will Win the NFC South This Year?

The NFC South is brimming with uncertainty this season. Carolina won the division last year at 8-9 after finishing in a three-team tie with Tampa Bay and Atlanta, and no club has established itself as a clear-cut favorite before Week 1. Tampa Bay leads the NFC South futures market, New Orleans sits within striking distance, and both Carolina and Atlanta remain credible threats themselves. The gap from first to fourth is small enough that quarterback play, health, and divisional games should cause meaningful market movement throughout the season.
Tampa Bay is the current market favorite, and that position makes sense even after a disappointing 2025 finish. The Buccaneers went 8-9 and gave away a division they had controlled from 2021 through 2024. Baker Mayfield remains the biggest reason to believe they can reclaim it. Tampa Bay has more stability at quarterback than any other NFC South team, which carries considerable value in a division where the other three clubs still have important questions at the position.
The offense will look different without Mike Evans, but Tampa Bay is not starting from scratch. Chris Godwin and Emeka Egbuka give Mayfield established receiving options, while Bucky Irving remains part of the backfield. The club also invested heavily in improving a defense that needed more pressure, using its first-round selection on Rueben Bain Jr. after adding linebacker Alex Anzalone. Those moves give Todd Bowles more pieces to work with after defense stood out as one of Tampa Bay's biggest offseason needs.
Polymarket traders have priced Tampa Bay as the team to beat, though the market stops well short of treating the Buccaneers as dominant. Tampa Bay has the most dependable quarterback situation and a roster capable of winning 9 or 10 games, but last year's collapse showed why there is still skepticism.
New Orleans is the closest team to Tampa Bay in the current market, which makes the Saints one of the more interesting cases in the division. Tyler Shough enters his second NFL season after showing enough progress as a rookie to give the organization confidence in its future. Kellen Moore now has a deeper collection of offensive options around him, including Chris Olave and running backs Alvin Kamara and Travis Etienne.
New Orleans also spent the No. 8 selection in the 2026 draft on wide receiver Jordyn Tyson. Adding another potential difference-maker to an offense that needed help around Shough was a logical move, even though the Saints will need their key skill players to stay available. Defensively, Kaden Elliss joined the roster after playing in Atlanta, giving the Saints another experienced piece in the middle of the unit.
The market is giving New Orleans considerably more respect than a typical rebuilding club. That appears to be a vote of confidence in Shough's development and the roster additions around him. The Saints do not have Tampa Bay's proven quarterback record, but they may have more room to improve from last season. If Shough takes a meaningful second-year step, New Orleans could quickly become Tampa Bay's primary competition.
Atlanta may be the most difficult team in the division to price. The talent at the top of the roster is obvious. Bijan Robinson has produced consecutive seasons with more than 1,400 rushing yards, and Kevin Stefanski's history of building offenses around the running game could make Robinson even more dangerous in 2026. Drake London also gives Atlanta a clear lead receiving option.
Quarterback uncertainty is the issue holding the Falcons back. Tua Tagovailoa has been named the starter, while Michael Penix Jr. continues his return from the ACL injury that ended his 2025 season. Atlanta kept four quarterbacks on its initial roster partly because of the injury histories of their signal callers. Tagovailoa also struggled for much of the preseason before showing some improvement late.
That explains why Atlanta sits at the bottom of the current Polymarket market despite finishing 8-9 last season. The Falcons have enough offensive talent to outperform that position, but traders are clearly demanding proof at quarterback before buying in. If Tagovailoa plays efficient football and Penix continues progressing, Atlanta could become one of the fastest risers in this market.
The Panthers won the NFC South at 8-9 last season, yet the market still places them behind Tampa Bay and New Orleans. That suggests traders view last year's title as evidence of progress without assuming Carolina has created meaningful separation from the rest of the division.
There are legitimate reasons to believe the Panthers can improve. Bryce Young enters his fourth season after taking another step forward in 2025, and Tetairoa McMillan immediately emerged as his top target as a rookie. McMillan finished his first season with 70 catches, 1,014 receiving yards, and seven touchdowns, giving Carolina the type of No. 1 receiver it had been missing. The defense also added Jaelan Phillips and Devin Lloyd, two notable upgrades for a unit that needed more playmaking talent.
Still, Carolina needs more offensive production. The Panthers ranked 27th in scoring last season at 18.3 points per game, and Young must become more consistent if Carolina is going to defend its title.
The NFC South is unlikely to produce a runaway winner. All four teams finished last season within two games of one another, and three ended at 8-9. Tampa Bay earns our prediction because Mayfield gives the Buccaneers the strongest combination of quarterback stability and established offensive production. The defensive additions also address clear weaknesses from last year without requiring the team to rebuild its identity.
New Orleans is the most appealing alternative if Shough makes another leap, while Carolina has a path through continued growth from Young and McMillan. Atlanta has perhaps the widest range of possible outcomes because so much depends on Tagovailoa and Penix. Tampa Bay simply has fewer major questions than its rivals, making the Buccaneers my prediction to win the 2026 NFC South.
