Prediction: Akron Zips to win the MAC Tournament.
Akron is our prediction to capture a fourth consecutive MAC Tournament championship in 2027. New head coach Dustin Ford spent nine seasons as an assistant under John Groce, helping build the program's championship culture. That familiarity should ease the coaching transition while preserving much of the approach responsible for Akron's recent postseason success.
Preseason advanced metrics also support Akron's championship potential when making this year's college basketball predictions. Bart Torvik's 2026–27 preseason projections placed the Zips first among MAC teams, with an estimated adjusted defensive efficiency of 101.0 points allowed per 100 possessions.
Miami remains Akron's most significant challenger, particularly with its returning backcourt and established offensive system under Travis Steele. Toledo and Kent State also have the personnel to make deep tournament runs. However, Akron's combination of defensive potential, experienced leadership, and familiarity with the demands of playing consecutive games in Cleveland makes the Zips our choice to capture the 2027 MAC championship.
Tournament Format
Only the top eight of the MAC's 12 teams qualify for the conference tournament, making regular-season positioning critical to championship chances.
Balanced Scheduling
The 22-game double round-robin schedule gives contenders two meetings with every MAC opponent, providing more meaningful head-to-head comparisons before the tournament.
Akron's Dominance
The Zips have won three consecutive MAC Tournament titles, establishing a track record of success in Cleveland that distinguishes them from other contenders.
Unpredictable Postseason
Miami completed an undefeated 2025–26 regular season but lost to eighth-seeded UMass in the conference quarterfinals, illustrating the unpredictability of the tournament format.
