Prediction: UC Irvine Anteaters to win the Big West Championship.
UC Irvine enters the 2026–27 campaign with the strongest combination of established success, coaching continuity, and defensive identity in the conference. The Anteaters finished 15–5 in Big West play last season and reached the conference championship game. Under longtime head coach Russell Turner, the program has consistently demonstrated an ability to control games through physical defense and disciplined execution.
The Anteaters' defensive numbers strengthen that outlook for our college basketball predictions in this league. During the 2025–26 season, UC Irvine limited opponents to 38.8% field-goal shooting and approximately 45.2% effective field-goal shooting, while averaging a conference-leading 5.83 blocked shots per game. Although the roster has changed, returning forwards Elijah Chol and Nes Emeneke provide an interior defensive foundation that will translate well to postseason competition.
UC San Diego and UC Santa Barbara will be legitimate challengers, particularly if their perimeter offenses reach their potential. However, UC Irvine's established system and experience navigating the Big West schedule give the Anteaters a narrow advantage. Securing a top-two tournament seed would further strengthen their championship outlook by allowing them to advance directly to the semifinals.
Top 2 Seeds
The two highest seeds advance directly to the semifinals, making regular-season positioning especially valuable.
Tournament Qualification
Only eight of the conference's 12 programs qualify, increasing the importance of consistently strong league performances.
Conference Realignment
Utah Valley, Sacramento State, and California Baptist join the Big West in 2026–27, introducing unfamiliar opponents and potentially changing the competitive balance.
One-Bid League
Despite reaching consecutive conference tournament finals in 2025 and 2026, the Anteaters fell short both times, demonstrating that regular-season dominance does not guarantee a tournament title.
