What We Learned From Premier League Gameweek 1: Five Data-Backed Takeaways

Premier League Gameweek 1 has already delivered enough warning signs to make several preseason assumptions worth revisiting.
Arsenal looked every bit the defending champion in a controlled 3-0 win over Coventry, Brighton demolished Aston Villa 4-0, Brentford produced arguably the performance of the weekend against Tottenham, while promoted Hull City stunned Manchester United 2-0. Liverpool, meanwhile, needed a 99th-minute penalty to escape Newcastle with a point.
The scores provide the headlines, but the underlying numbers have their own story to tell. Here are five things we learned from the opening weekend of the 2026/27 Premier League season.
Brentford are worth watching
Their 3-0 win over Spurs was backed by a huge 3.96 xG, suggesting the result was no fluke.
United need better chances
Man United had 21 shots, but 16 were worth less than 0.10 xG. Volume is masking poor shot quality.
Arsenal remain the benchmark
A controlled 1.79 xG to 0.28 xGA win showed the champions' underlying structure remains intact.
Brighton could be undervalued
Brighton crushed Villa 4-0 and didn't allow a single shot on target, reinforcing their potential betting upside.
Liverpool have a transition problem
Both Newcastle goals came on fast breaks, continuing a weakness that opponents with pace can exploit.
The most eye-catching result might have been Hull beating Manchester United, but Brentford's 3-0 dismantling of Tottenham produced the strongest underlying performance of Gameweek 1.
The Bees generated 3.96 xG, their highest total in a Premier League match since January 2025. It was also the most expected goals Tottenham have allowed in a league match since Liverpool generated 5.63 against them in December 2024.
The penalty missed by Igor Thiago inflates that overall xG figure slightly, but removing the spot kick still leaves Brentford with 3.2 non-penalty xG. That is not the statistical profile of a fortunate 3-0.
Seven different Brentford players registered a shot on target, while Tottenham had just two players test Caoimhín Kelleher.
Perhaps most encouragingly, Brentford weren't simply playing direct football and waiting for Spurs mistakes. Their opening goal followed a 15-pass sequence, the third-longest build-up to a Brentford Premier League goal under Keith Andrews.
Mamadou Sangaré immediately impressed. His ability to carry the ball through midfield helped Brentford overwhelm a Spurs midfield containing significantly more expensive personnel. The Mali International registered 2 assists, while his defensive work also impressed as he won the ball 7 times for the Bees.
Brentford began the season priced at around +2800 for a top-four finish, which remains extremely ambitious, but markets closer to their week-to-week performance deserve attention. Rather than immediately chasing a futures bet after one result, Brentford look more interesting as a potential underdog or plus-money moneyline team at home.
Tottenham are the bigger concern. Spurs remain around +300 to finish in the top four, despite conceding almost four expected goals in Roberto De Zerbi's first league match. While I still believe in my pre-season prognosis that Spurs will turn heads this season, their performance in West London was disjointed and bordered on embarrassing at times. Until their build-up and defensive structure settle, +300 looks difficult to justify.
Hull City's 2-0 win was the biggest upset of the weekend. It would also be easy to look at the score and conclude that Manchester United offered nothing offensively, but the data tells a different story.
United recorded 21 shots and 1.83 xG, meaning they actually created enough aggregate shooting opportunities to score. The problem was where those attempts came from.
Sixteen of United's 21 shots carried an xG value below 0.10. Their average open-play shot was worth just 0.087 xG. That is even lower than the 0.104 xG per open-play attempt they averaged under Michael Carrick last season.
High shot volume can make an attack appear productive while masking a lack of penetration. United had territory and possession but repeatedly settled for difficult attempts rather than creating chances around the six-yard box.
Hull did the opposite. Both goals came from set-piece situations, allowing the promoted side to turn limited possession into dangerous moments as their midfield won the physical battle against United's new-look pairing of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. It seems the physicality and defensive nous of new signing Carlos Baleba cannot come soon enough.
There is no reason to panic about United after 90 minutes, but bettors should be careful using raw shot totals as evidence that the attack is functioning. They are still priced at roughly -160 for a top-four finish, a significant vote of confidence from the market.
Their Gameweek 2 matchup against Ipswich provides an immediate test. United are approximately -220 home favorites, but their chance-quality numbers make alternative markets worth considering before automatically laying that price.
If Carrick's side again dominates shots without improving average shot quality, it becomes a trend rather than opening-day variance.
Arsenal's 3-0 win over Coventry wasn't spectacular, but it was further proof that the Gunners have a highly efficient winning blueprint.
The defending champions generated 1.79 xG to Coventry's 0.28, attempted 20 shots to Coventry's four and allowed only one shot on target.
They were 2-0 ahead after only 23 minutes. From there, Arsenal didn't need to turn the contest into an end-to-end game. They controlled possession, restricted Coventry's penalty-area access and completed a routine victory.
That resembles the profile behind their 2025/26 title. Last season Arsenal recorded a 9.9 PPDA, second only to Bournemouth among Premier League teams at the time the league published its pressing comparison. Lower PPDA indicates a more aggressive press. They also allowed fewer opposition touches inside their own penalty area than any other side in that dataset.
In other words, the personnel have changed, but the structure has not. Their managerial stability, coupled with a squad that has only got stronger this summer, make it difficult to see how their rivals can overthrow them this season.
Arsenal entered the campaign as Opta's most likely champion, winning 40.6% of 10,000 preseason simulations. The betting market now has them around +125 to retain the Premier League, ahead of Manchester City at +350 and Liverpool around +500.
There isn't necessarily value in shortening a preseason Arsenal position after beating Coventry at home.
The important takeaway is different: nothing in Gameweek 1 challenged the underlying case for Arsenal being favorites. While several challengers displayed structural problems, Arsenal looked almost exactly like the team bettors expected.
Brighton's 4-0 victory over Aston Villa was the biggest winning margin of the opening weekend so far, and all four goals arrived within the opening 31 minutes.
Villa's red card complicates any attempt to evaluate the full 90 minutes, but it came after Brighton had already established control.
More concerning for Villa was their attacking output. For the first time since October 2022, Aston Villa completed an entire Premier League match without registering a shot on target.
Brighton's aggressive positioning repeatedly prevented Villa from progressing cleanly through midfield, while their ability to turn possession recoveries into immediate attacking pressure was exactly what Fabian Hürzeler wants from this side.
One match doesn't establish a new PPDA trend, but the data points to Brighton again trying to compress games high up the pitch rather than defend passively, boasting a league-leading PPDA of 3.74 and 13 DC (deep completions).
The question is whether that pressure can produce the same chance differential against stronger opposition.
Brighton remain approximately +1200 to finish in the top four, compared with +400 for Aston Villa.
A top-four bet after one 4-0 win would be an overreaction. A more interesting strategy is watching Brighton in match markets against the Premier League's second tier, particularly when the market prices them closer to mid-table expectations than their underlying performance warrants.
Gameweek 2 gives us an immediate benchmark: Brighton travel to Chelsea on Sunday.
A 2-2 draw away at Newcastle is hardly a disastrous start for Andoni Iraola, but the way in which the Reds conceded will be of greater concern to the Spaniard.
Both Newcastle goals came from fast breaks, continuing a trend from last season. Liverpool have now conceded nine goals from fast-break situations since the beginning of last season, more than any other Premier League club.
Iraola's football is designed around aggression. His Bournemouth teams pressed high and tried to recover possession quickly. Liverpool now have players capable of executing that style at a higher technical level, but pushing more bodies forward also increases the importance of rest defense when the first press is beaten.
Newcastle repeatedly demonstrated the risk. Liverpool eventually escaped through Dominik Szoboszlai's 99th-minute penalty, but the equalizer shouldn't obscure the underlying defensive issue. This wasn't random finishing variance. Newcastle attacked a specific weakness, one that still lingers from last season's faied campaign.
Liverpool are still approximately +500 to win the Premier League, making them the market's third choice behind Arsenal and Manchester City.
That price doesn't need to be abandoned after one draw, and they remain my value pick for the league title this year.
But Liverpool's transition defense should influence individual matchup betting immediately. Teams with pace on the counter may offer more value in both-teams-to-score, team-total and player shot markets against Liverpool than conventional power ratings suggest.
Their next league game, at home to Nottingham Forest, should provide a very different test. Liverpool are around -200 favorites, and Forest's ability to attack the space behind Iraola's press will be worth monitoring.
Team | GW1 Signal | Data Point | Early Betting Read |
|---|---|---|---|
Arsenal | Title-winning structure intact | 1.79 xG vs 0.28 xGA | Still deserved favorites |
Brentford | Performance bigger than result | 3.96 xG vs Tottenham | Watch as home underdogs |
Man United | Shot quality remains concern | 16 of 21 shots below 0.10 xG | Don't trust volume alone |
Brighton | High-pressure ceiling is significant | Villa had 0 shots on target | Potential matchup value |
Liverpool | Transition defense vulnerable | 9 fast-break goals allowed since start of last season | Look at opponent attacking props |
There is one other result worth keeping in context. Two of the three promoted clubs won this weekend, with Hull beating Manchester United and Ipswich defeating Sunderland. It is only the fifth time in Premier League history that two promoted teams have won on the opening weekend.
That does not suddenly make Hull a safe survival bet. The latest outright market still prices them as the most likely team to be relegated, at around -400, with Coventry and Ipswich next at approximately -150.
Gameweek 2 already contains several games capable of testing these early conclusions.
Liverpool vs Nottingham Forest: Can Forest exploit the space behind Liverpool's aggressive defensive structure?
Tottenham vs Newcastle: Spurs need a response after conceding 3.96 xG. Newcastle just demonstrated how dangerous they can be attacking transition space.
Chelsea vs Brighton: Probably the most interesting data matchup of the weekend if Brighton attempt the same aggressive approach they used against Villa.
Manchester United vs Ipswich: United should dominate possession again. The important number isn't total shots, but how many are generated from dangerous areas.
Aston Villa vs Arsenal: The defending champions' first substantially tougher test and a better indicator of whether their early title favoritism is justified.
Gameweek 1 hasn't told us who will win the Premier League, but it has given us the first clues about how a season of unprecedented change could unfold. Gameweek 2 will help separate the early trends from opening-weekend anomalies.
