Few Premier League teams enter 2026/27 with a bigger gap between what they achieved last season and what the underlying data suggests they were capable of.
Chelsea finished a disappointing 10th with 52 points, winning only 14 of their 38 league matches. Yet their advanced numbers looked nothing like those of a mid-table team.
The Blues generated 66.74 xG, the second-highest total in the Premier League behind Manchester City and fractionally ahead of champions Arsenal. They scored only 58 goals, meaning they finished almost nine goals below their expected output.
At the other end, Chelsea conceded 52 times from approximately 52.49 xGA. Their defensive results were therefore almost exactly in line with expectation.
That produced an expected-goal difference of approximately +14.3, compared with an actual goal difference of just +6.
This is the central argument behind Chelsea's 2026/27 betting outlook.
Last season's table makes them look like a team requiring a major rebuild. The underlying numbers suggest they instead need to turn good attacking process into goals and convert more dominant performances into points.
Chelsea's biggest source of optimism is their chance creation. Only Manchester City generated more xG across the 2025/26 Premier League season. Chelsea averaged approximately 1.76 xG per game, while attempting 509 shots, roughly 13.4 per match. The problem was conversion.
Their 58 actual goals were almost nine below the 66.74 expected by the quality of their chances. That is a meaningful shortfall over a 38-game season.
There is no guarantee that underperformance automatically reverses, but Chelsea are not starting from a position where they need to create substantially more, they just need to finish better. That makes them an intriguing positive-regression candidate, particularly given the attacking talent now available to Xabi Alonso.
João Pedro scored 15 Premier League goals from approximately 12.1 non-penalty xG last season, while Cole Palmer still managed 10 despite injuries limiting him to 26 league appearances.
Chelsea have now added Morgan Rogers for £117 million ($158 million), giving Alonso another player capable of carrying the ball into dangerous areas and contributing directly around the penalty box.
If the underlying attacking process remains anywhere close to last season's level, Chelsea should score considerably more than 58 goals.
Chelsea's managerial instability played a major part in last season's disappointing campaign. They went through two permanent head coaches before appointing Xabi Alonso for 2026/27. Alonso arrives on a four-year contract after previous spells with Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid.
For all the attention surrounding his arrival, one of Chelsea's biggest advantages has nothing to do with tactics. They have no European football.
While Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Bournemouth and Brighton will all have to manage additional midweek fixtures, Chelsea can devote their preparation almost entirely to the Premier League and domestic cups. This is an advantage that Michael Carrick's Manchester United used well during the second half of their 2025/26 Premier League campaign, and given the strength in depth the Blues boast throughout the squad, the expectation will be that Alonso and Chelsea will be able to replicate the success of their rivals.
That scheduling advantage could become particularly significant over the winter period, when fixtures reall build up on sides with ambitions for both domestic and European success.
Alonso will have more time on the training ground to implement his structure, while important players should face less rotation and cumulative fatigue.
For a squad this deep, fewer matches may actually create selection problems, but from a performance perspective it is difficult to view the lack of European football as anything other than a positive.
Chelsea's headline summer signing is Morgan Rogers. The England international arrived from Aston Villa in July and signed a contract through 2033. Chelsea paid a British-record fee reported at approximately £117 million ($158 million).
Rogers produced 10 goals and six assists in the Premier League last season, playing more than 3,200 minutes for Villa.
The underlying profile is particularly interesting. His non-penalty xG rate was around 0.35 per 90, placing him among the stronger attacking midfielders in the league for scoring threat. He also remained a productive shot creator, contributing more than 0.2 expected assists per 90.
Rogers gives Alonso something Chelsea have occasionally lacked: a powerful ball carrier who can move centrally, break defensive lines himself and still arrive in scoring areas.
The tactical question is how he fits alongside Palmer. Alonso has already spoken publicly about incorporating Rogers and Palmer into the same attacking structure, suggesting Chelsea intend to build around both rather than make them compete for one position.
That should make Chelsea less predictable when opponents attempt to crowd Palmer out of central areas.
Palmer's 2025/26 campaign was interrupted by injury, but he remained Chelsea's most important individual attacking player.
He scored 10 league goals in 26 appearances, despite recording approximately 5.1 non-penalty xG. That level of finishing overperformance is worth noting.
Palmer has demonstrated enough technical quality over multiple seasons to suggest he can consistently beat average finishing models, but expecting him to score at almost twice his non-penalty xG every year would be aggressive. The more important variable is availability. Driven perhaps by an exhausting 2024/25 season in which Palmer racked up 52 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions, Palmer missed significant periods of last season with a groin injury.
Chelsea's attack generated elite xG numbers even with Palmer missing a significant part of the campaign. A healthier season from him, combined with Rogers and João Pedro, should give Alonso significantly more attacking flexibility.
Chelsea do not need Palmer to carry the attack as heavily as he did earlier in his Stamford Bridge career, and that may ultimately make him more dangerous.
The attacking data supports significant optimism, but the defense explains why Chelsea remain some distance behind Arsenal in the title market.
They conceded 52 goals from 52.49 xGA, approximately 1.38 xGA per match, demonstrating that there was essentially no statistical misfortune involved. Chelsea allowed chances at a level consistent with the goals they conceded. That is the area Alonso must improve.
Chelsea have responded by changing personnel. Maxence Lacroix has joined from Crystal Palace as part of an extensive defensive overhaul, while Marc Cucurella, Trevoh Chalobah and others have departed or are moving on.
There is also uncertainty in goal, with Mike Penders competing with Robert Sánchez for playing time. Chelsea do not need to become Arsenal defensively to make the top four, but reducing their xGA from around 1.38 per game toward 1.1-1.2 would substantially alter their season projection, particularly if the attack continues producing close to 1.75 xG per match.
That defensive improvement is the key number to monitor under Alonso.
Chelsea generated approximately 11.94 set-piece xG last season, well behind Arsenal but still a meaningful source of attacking output, but there is reason to believe that area could improve.
Chelsea have recruited former Aston Villa set-piece specialist Austin MacPhee, who oversaw one of the Premier League's most productive dead-ball attacks last season.
That appointment is particularly interesting because Chelsea already possess the physical profile to become more dangerous from corners and indirect free kicks. Lacroix adds another aerial presence, while Rogers is familiar with MacPhee's work from their time together at Aston Villa.
This probably does not turn Chelsea into Arsenal overnight, but it gives bettors another team-level trend to monitor early in the season. If the volume and quality of their set-piece chances rise substantially, Chelsea defender scoring props and team goal markets could become more interesting.

That makes positive attacking regression considerably easier to support than it would be for a side coming off an unsustainable finishing season, and the summer changes reinforce the case.
Alonso replaces last season's managerial instability, Rogers provides another high-end attacker and Chelsea have no European fixtures competing for preparation time.
However, the title market is more difficult. Chelsea are currently around +800 to win the Premier League, making them fourth favorites behind Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool at several books.
There is enough upside to justify calling them title outsiders rather than dismissing the possibility completely, but moving from 10th to first remains a huge jump.
The Top 4 market at around -125 is much easier to defend. Chelsea do not need Alonso to immediately produce a title-winning side. They need one of last season's strongest chance-creation teams to convert more of those chances and become moderately better defensively. That is a much more achievable target.
Chelsea's depth makes playing time the main complication in their prop markets. João Pedro has the clearest central scoring profile, while Palmer and Rogers offer different combinations of shooting and creativity. Early-season prices should be approached with confirmed roles and lineups in mind.

Chelsea may be the Premier League team whose final position from last season tells us the least about their actual level.

The challenge for Xabi Alonso is turning that process into results. Chelsea need to finish closer to expectation, tighten a defense that allowed around 1.38 xGA per match and establish a settled structure after another season of managerial instability.
The additions of Morgan Rogers, Maxence Lacroix and several experienced squad players give Alonso more options, while the absence of European football provides valuable training and recovery time.
At +800, the title requires too many things to go right immediately, but Top 4 at -125 is much easier to support. Chelsea already created chances at a Champions League level last season. If their actual results begin to resemble their underlying performance, a return to the top four should be firmly within reach.
