Aston Villa begin the 2026/27 season in a very different position from Arsenal. There is little doubt about what Unai Emery has achieved at Villa Park, but the underlying numbers raise legitimate questions about whether another top-four finish can be expected.
Villa finished fourth with 65 points, winning 19 of their 38 league matches and qualifying for the Champions League. They also lifted the Europa League after beating Freiburg 3-0 in the final, giving Emery his fifth title in the competition. The league campaign was impressive, but the advanced metrics were considerably less convincing.
Villa scored 56 goals from approximately 48.46 xG while conceding 49 from around 55.75 xGA. That left them with a +7 actual goal difference but an expected-goal difference of roughly -7.3. Much of their xG overperformance was a result of the long-range shooting prowess of Morgan Rogers (10 goals from 7.15 xG), who has departed for Chelsea in a massive £116 million ($157 million) deal.
Villa outperformed their expected numbers at both ends of the pitch. That does not automatically mean a major regression is coming. Emery has repeatedly shown an ability to extract more from his squad than the raw numbers suggest. But it does make backing Villa to reproduce another top-four finish considerably harder than backing them to remain inside the wider European places.
There may not be a single statistic that captures Aston Villa under Emery better than their performance after falling behind. Villa collected 23 Premier League points from losing positions last season, more than any other team in the division. That speaks to both mentality and tactical flexibility. Emery is unusually proactive when changing the shape of games. Villa can move between patient possession, quicker vertical attacks and more conservative defensive structures depending on the scoreline and opponent.
That makes them particularly interesting from a live-betting perspective. Falling behind does not necessarily remove Villa from a match in the same way it might with a lower-table side. Bettors should therefore be cautious about aggressively opposing them after an early goal, particularly at Villa Park.
Their home record reinforces that point. Villa collected 38 of their 65 points at home, winning 12 of 19 league matches in Birmingham. That home-away split should remain relevant when evaluating Villa moneyline and draw-no-bet markets throughout the season.
The biggest reason for caution is Villa's defence. Their 55.75 xGA equates to approximately 1.47 expected goals conceded per game. That is high for a team trying to establish itself permanently in the Champions League places. Villa ultimately conceded only 49 times, around seven goals fewer than the quality of chances they allowed would suggest.
The concern for bettors is straightforward: if Villa continue giving opponents around 1.5 xG per match but stop outperforming that number defensively, then The Villans become serious regression candidates. This is the main reason a Top 6 bet makes more sense than Emery's men once again upstting the odds and securing another top 4 finish. Villa do not necessarily need an elite defense to finish sixth. They probably need something much closer to one to finish fourth again.
It also gives weekly bettors something to monitor. Both teams to score and opponent team-total markets could become particularly relevant when Villa face stronger attacking teams.
Villa's attacking numbers tell a similar story. They scored 56 league goals from approximately 48.46 xG, outperforming their expected total by more than seven goals. They also generated roughly 12.7 shots per match.
That is a solid attacking profile, but not one that suggests Villa overwhelmed opponents every week. A meaningful part of their threat also came from set pieces. Villa generated 14.6 set-piece xG, putting them 6th in the division in this category. That makes the summer departure of set-piece specialist Austin MacPhee to Premier League rivals Chelsea an interesting factor to monitor.
The personnel remain capable of creating problems from corners and free kicks, but it would be risky to assume the same level of dead-ball efficiency automatically carries over into 2026/27. There is therefore a little more pressure on Villa to improve their open-play chance creation, something which could also prove challenging due to one key summer departure.
The biggest attacking question is how Villa replace Morgan Rogers. His departure removes one of their most important ball carriers and creators, as well as a player capable of turning defensive transitions into dangerous attacking situations. Johan Manzambi has been brought in to absorb some of that responsibility, and he arrives with a profile that should suit Emery's system. Manzambi can carry the ball through midfield, arrive in advanced areas and contribute both shots and final-third creation.
Villa are unlikely to replace Rogers simply by asking one new signing to replicate his output. The creative burden will probably be spread across Manzambi, Watkins and the rest of Emery's attacking unit. That makes Villa's early-season chance creation one of the most important trends to follow. If their open-play xG improves while Watkins continues to finish at a sustainable level, concerns about regression become much less severe.
Villa's 65-point total last season is difficult to evaluate in isolation.
On one hand, they finished fourth, won 19 league games and once again showed how difficult an Emery team is to beat.
On the other, the underlying metrics were closer to those of a European contender than a genuine title challenger:
That expected-goal differential is the number that prevents Villa from being an appealing title bet or an automatic choice to repeat last season's top-four finish.
There have also been important personnel changes, which adds another layer of uncertainty. But this is still an Emery team with Watkins leading the line, an excellent home record and a strong track record of turning close matches into points.
The Top 6 market at +120 therefore strikes a better balance between respecting Villa's progress and acknowledging the possibility of regression. Villa can fall two places from last season and the bet still cashes.
Villa's player props are best approached through role and shot volume rather than simply backing goalscorer markets. Watkins has the strongest established statistical floor, while Manzambi and Villa's younger attackers may offer more value if bookmakers are slow to adjust to their minutes and attacking involvement. Brian Madjo is one to look out for after his breakout during pre-season, which he backed up with an imposing, goalscoring performance against PSG in the European Super Cup final.

Aston Villa have earned the right to be considered one of the Premier League's strongest teams under Unai Emery, but there are reasons to be cautious about simply projecting last season's fourth-place finish forward.
Their 65 points came despite an expected-goal difference of approximately -7.3, while both their attacking and defensive results outperformed the underlying numbers. Significant squad changes add another element of uncertainty.
That does not mean Villa are destined to regress dramatically. Emery's game management remains a genuine advantage, Watkins continues to generate sustainable scoring numbers and Manzambi gives Villa another high-upside attacking option. Their league-high 23 points from losing positions also demonstrate how difficult they are to put away.
At +4000, there is not enough in the underlying data to make Villa an appealing title bet. Top 6 at +120 requires much less. Villa can regress from fourth, absorb their summer changes and still deliver a winning futures ticket.
