The underlying numbers broadly support that improvement. United generated 64.71 xG while allowing 49.40 xGA, leaving them with an expected-goal differential of approximately +15.3. That was not title-winning territory, but it represented a genuine top-four profile rather than a season driven entirely by finishing variance or a series of narrow results.
There are still enough weaknesses to make United difficult to recommend at +850 to win the Premier League, particularly with Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool setting a higher statistical standard. That is a significantly more realistic target than asking whether they are ready to win 25-plus league games and challenge for the title.
The biggest difference between this United side and several recent versions is that the improvement no longer feels dependent on chaos. Carrick simplified the structure after taking over, placing greater emphasis on midfield balance and giving United's attacking players clearer roles than they had under Ruben Amorim. The result was a team that could still counterattack quickly but no longer needed matches to become stretched before it looked dangerous.
That balance was particularly important for Bruno Fernandes. Rather than asking United's best creator to solve every phase of possession, Carrick gave him more freedom to operate higher up the pitch. The results were extraordinary: Fernandes finished with 21 Premier League assists, setting a new competition record, while also scoring nine goals.
However, that number comes with an important warning. Fernandes generated approximately 11.75 expected assists, meaning teammates converted his chances at an exceptional rate.
