Manchester City enter 2026/27 in an unusual position. Their underlying numbers still resemble those of a title contender, yet the changes around the club make it considerably harder to argue that they should be backed to finish above every other elite team.
City finished second with 78 points last season while producing the Premier League's highest xG total, and preseason projection models still expect them to remain near the top. There is therefore a strong case for another high-points season even if Enzo Maresca's first campaign does not end with the trophy. For that reason, Manchester City 75+ Premier League points is the futures angle that makes the most sense.
Nothing in City's 2025/26 attacking data suggests that their competitive window suddenly closed with Pep Guardiola's departure. They scored 77 goals and generated approximately 70.96 xG, equivalent to 1.87 xG per game. That was the best attacking output in the league by expected goals and came alongside 595 shots and 205 efforts on target.
The broader profile was strong too. City's approximately 44.54 xGA left them with an expected-goal differential around +26.4, meaning that while Arsenal had by far the superior defence, City were still comfortably operating at Champions League level. They collected 78 points despite Rodri's slow return to form and fitness and a major turnover in personnel (especially at the back) in which much of the side that dominated the Premier League for the past decade left the club. When a transitional year becomes a title challenge, rivals should be worried.
Erling Haaland remains the clearest reason City's floor is so high. He scored 27 Premier League goals last season and led qualifying players with approximately 3.84 shots per 90, giving City a reliable source of high-volume finishing even when their broader attacking structure was not functioning perfectly.
Haaland's consistency could smooth out what is likely to be periods of tactical instability. Maresca may need time to rebuild City's midfield and pressing structure, but he does not need to redesign the attack around an unproven No. 9. The supply behind Haaland is also strong. Rayan Cherki finished last season with 12 assists and approximately 0.44 expected assists per 90, while Phil Foden and Jérémy Doku give City multiple ways to create from central and wide areas.
Even if City's possession game becomes less controlled without Guardiola and Rodri, there is still enough individual quality to keep their scoring output among the league's best.
The title question is much more demanding because City are no longer competing against a theoretical standard. They have to outperform Arsenal, Liverpool and the rest of the league over 38 games.
Current markets still have Arsenal ahead of City, while preseason models also generally place a meaningful gap between the two. That is the central argument for separating City's points outlook from their title outlook.
A team possessing City's quality can comfortably clear 75 points without ever becoming the most likely champion. The 75+ points market therefore captures City's considerable floor without requiring bettors to correctly predict how quickly Maresca adapts, whether Arsenal maintain last season's level or whether Liverpool improve enough to challenge both.
The biggest reason to hesitate over City as outright champions is the midfield. Rodri has left for Barcelona, while Bernardo Silva has also departed and Guardiola is no longer there to continually adjust City's positional structure.
Elliot Anderson has arrived from Nottingham Forest for a club-record £116 million, giving Maresca a player who can carry, progress and recycle possession through midfield. City are also continuing to explore further midfield additions before the window closes, with highly-rated Ayyoub Bouaddi widely expected to join the Cityzens before the end of the window, whie Enzo Fernande remains an option.
Anderson's arrival is a critical factor if City are to have a successful season, but he does not need to become Rodri for City to reach 75 points. Rather the concern is whether City will be able to reproduce the level of control that once turned 75-point seasons into 90-point ones during their heyday.
Rodri dictated tempo, protected counterattacks and allowed City to suffocate opponents after taking the lead. Replacing all of those functions simultaneously is far harder than replacing his passing numbers on a spreadsheet, no matter who they sign.
City conceded only 35 league goals last season, but the underlying defensive number was less dominant. Their approximately 44.54 xGA equates to around 1.17 per game, suggesting they conceded almost 10 fewer actual goals than their chances allowed would normally predict.
That is still a strong defensive number. It simply was not close to Arsenal's level of chance suppression. City also developed an unexpected set-piece weakness. They conceded more league goals from set plays last season than they had across the previous two campaigns combined, with corners directly costing them in several key games.
Maresca's task therefore goes beyond preserving an elite attack. He needs to improve City's defensive control while simultaneously integrating a rebuilt midfield and replacing several experienced defenders. Those issues do not make 75 points look unrealistic. They do make an 85-plus-point title campaign harder to assume.
Maresca is arguably one of the more natural successors City could have chosen. He worked under Guardiola previously and uses many of the same positional principles, including patient buildup, overloads around midfield and an emphasis on controlling games through possession.
However, Guardiola had spent a decade refining City around the strengths of individual players, and Maresca has to establish his own structure while working with a squad that has lost Rodri, Bernardo Silva, John Stones and Nathan Aké, among others. City's 3-0 Community Shield defeat to Arsenal provided an early reminder that the transition may take time.
That result should not be overinterpreted, but it illustrates why the first few months could contain more volatility than bettors became accustomed to under Guardiola. A few dropped points during that adjustment period would hurt City's title chances without necessarily threatening a 75-point season.
There is also a relatively straightforward way City can protect their points total even without becoming dramatically better. They dropped 20 points from winning positions last season, an unusually high total for a team with championship ambitions. City were frequently dominant early in matches but became less effective at controlling territory and transitions as games progressed.
That pattern is particularly relevant to Maresca because his teams are generally built around maintaining possession and limiting the opponent's opportunities to generate momentum. If City recover even a modest proportion of those dropped points, it would offset some of the natural regression that may come from their defensive overperformance.
City do not need Maresca to immediately improve every part of the team. They simply need enough gains in game management to compensate for whatever is lost during the midfield transition.
A 75-point bet is not without risk. The obvious downside scenario would involve several problems arriving together: Anderson struggling to assume his role in the side, City failing to replace Rodri before the deadline, Haaland missing an extended period and the defence regressing toward its xGA rather than last season's goals-against figure.
The managerial change also adds a type of uncertainty City have not experienced for a decade. Nevertheless, the broader projection market remains bullish on their baseline level. Most models still place City comfortably in the Champions League places, and several put their expected points total around the high 70s or low 80s.
That distribution fits the thesis well. There is more uncertainty around exactly how high City finish than around whether they remain one of England's strongest sides.
Player | Key Metric / Angle | Target Market |
|---|---|---|
Erling Haaland | Approx. 3.84 shots/90 and 27 league goals | Over 3.5 Shots / Anytime Goalscorer |
Rayan Cherki | Approx. 0.44 xA/90 and 12 assists | Assist Props / To Score or Assist |
Jérémy Doku | High isolation and dribble volume against deep defenses | 1+ SOT / Assist Props |
Phil Foden | More creative responsibility after Bernardo's departure | 2+ Shots / To Score or Assist |
Manchester City do not need to be the best team in England for their 2026/27 season to produce a strong betting return. Last season they reached 78 points, scored 77 goals and led the Premier League with approximately 70.96 xG, while their overall expected-goal differential remained comfortably among the league's best. That underlying level gives Maresca a substantial foundation.
What has changed is the amount of uncertainty around City's ceiling. Guardiola is gone, Rodri has joined Barcelona and several other experienced players have departed, so expecting City to immediately reproduce the control associated with their best title-winning teams would be aggressive. Arsenal enter the season with greater continuity and a much stronger defensive baseline, while Liverpool are another credible obstacle in an increasingly competitive title race.
City can experience a transitional season, concede more frequently and lose the title race while still collecting somewhere around 78 to 82 points. For that reason, Manchester City 75+ Premier League points is the cleaner futures position. It backs the elite attacking process, Haaland's goals and the depth of City's squad without requiring Maresca to immediately solve every problem created by the end of the Guardiola-Rodri era.
