Ipswich Town 2026/27 Premier League Preview: Can the Tractor Boys Stay Up?

Ipswich Town return to the Premier League with a stronger squad, more top-flight experience and a far more ambitious transfer window than many promoted teams manage. That does not necessarily mean they stay up.
Ipswich have enough attacking quality to make survival realistic, and they should be substantially more competitive than Hull. The problem is finding three teams they are clearly better than across a 38-game season.
Ipswich's promotion was deserved, but context is required when asessing if their Championship performance provides a strong enough foundation for Premier League survival.
They finished second after scoring 80 goals in 46 matches, giving them one of the division's strongest attacks, but their route to promotion was considerably less emphatic than Coventry's title-winning campaign. Ipswich were therefore already likely to require substantial reinforcement rather than simply expecting last season's performance level to translate upwards.
That distinction is important because the Premier League has become increasingly unforgiving for promoted clubs. Five out of six promoted teams were relegated across the 2024/25 and 2025/26 seasons despite heavy investment in some cases. While Sunderland showed last season that the gap can still be bridged, but doing so required a squad capable of competing physically and technically from the outset.
Ipswich appear to have recognised that reality. The question is whether their investment has raised the floor quickly enough.
Julio Enciso is the standout addition of an aggressive summer transfer strategy from the Tractor Boys. The Paraguay international returns to Ipswich after registering 12 goals and nine assists in 42 appearances for Strasbourg, with the reported fee of around €30 million reflecting the club's determination to add genuine creative quality rather than simply increasing squad depth.
There has also been substantial reinforcement around him. Abdul Fatawu arrives after scoring nine times in 44 appearances for Leicester last season and already has Premier League experience, while Issa Diop brings 173 top-flight appearances into a defence that will inevitably spend far longer without the ball. Daizen Maeda adds another high-energy attacking option, Emersonn provides competition through the middle and Florentino Luís gives O'Neil greater defensive security in midfield.
The scale of the rebuild is therefore both Ipswich's strongest argument for survival and one of the reasons caution remains necessary. Their ceiling has undoubtedly risen, but O'Neil now has to integrate a large number of new players while simultaneously imposing a different tactical approach following McKenna's departure.
Ipswich's attacking output was one of the major reasons they returned to the Premier League, but trying to reproduce the same approach against top-flight opposition would be a dangerous strategy.
O'Neil's appointment points towards a more pragmatic version of Ipswich, particularly because the recruitment of Diop and Florentino gives him the personnel to make the side more robust through the centre. Rather than needing Ipswich to dominate territory, the aim should be to remain compact enough for Enciso, Fatawu, Maeda and Jack Clarke to exploit space when matches open up.
That should give Ipswich a clearer route to points against teams outside the European places. Their forwards are good enough to punish defensive mistakes and their home matches at Portman Road should offer opportunities to play more aggressively, but survival is likely to depend on whether they can prevent games from becoming stretched before their attacking quality has a chance to matter.
There is also little room for a slow transition. Ipswich begin at home to Sunderland before facing Manchester United and Liverpool among their opening fixtures, meaning an early failure to collect points from the more manageable games could leave them chasing the table almost immediately.
Ipswich's survival case becomes much easier to make when looking at the options available in the final third.
Enciso provides the creative player they lacked for much of their Championship campaign, while Fatawu gives them a genuine one-on-one threat from wide areas. Maeda's movement should translate well to matches in which Ipswich have less possession, because his ability to attack space and pressure defenders does not depend on his team controlling the game.
There is also greater competition for places than there was last season, which should allow O'Neil to change the profile of his front line according to the opponent rather than asking the same players to carry the attacking burden every week.
That depth is one reason we would be reluctant to back Ipswich at the current relegation price. They may eventually finish inside the bottom three, but this does not look like an attack that should be dismissed simply because it belongs to a promoted team.

The difficulty with Ipswich is not constructing an argument for survival. Their recruitment provides one, and it is considerably stronger than the case available for a Hull side with much poorer underlying numbers. The problem comes when the league is assessed comparatively and three relegation places have to be filled.
We have already backed Coventry to survive because their Championship performance provided a stronger statistical foundation, while Fulham retain enough established Premier League quality to justify keeping them above the line despite legitimate concerns surrounding their summer overhaul. Ipswich consequently have to outperform at least one club that begins the season with a more proven top-flight base.
That is possible, particularly if Enciso becomes the creative focal point immediately and O'Neil can improve the defence without compromising the attacking qualities that drove promotion. Nevertheless, there are several variables that all need to work simultaneously: a new manager has to settle, a large group of signings need to integrate quickly and players accustomed to Championship opposition must adapt to spending longer periods under pressure.
For that reason, Ipswich remain our narrow choice for 18th rather than a team we are confident will be cut adrift. The distinction also matters from a betting perspective. At approximately -150, the relegation market already implies a 60% probability before accounting for margin, which leaves little incentive to back the drop unless the price moves considerably.
