Leeds United 2026/27 Premier League Preview: Can Farke Push Them Into the Top Half?

Leeds United did more than simply survive last season. After a difficult start, Daniel Farke found a structure that made them considerably harder to play through, and the result was a 14th-place finish with 47 points, three places and several points clear of the relegation zone. Their underlying numbers were also stronger than that league position suggests, which makes them one of the more interesting bottom-half teams entering 2026/27.
Leeds generated 53.93 xG and conceded 54.69 xGA across 38 matches, giving them an almost neutral expected-goal differential despite finishing with an actual goal difference of -7. That equates to approximately 1.42 xG/90 and 1.44 xGA/90, while their 49 goals scored slightly underperformed the quality of chances they created.
The summer has subsequently addressed two of the clearest weaknesses in the squad. James Trafford arrives as a major upgrade in goal, while Tarik Muharemovic replaces Pascal Struijk in central defence and Harry Wilson adds proven Premier League production in the final third. Rather than looking like a side that should be dragged back towards the relegation battle, Leeds appear better placed to move towards mid-table.
The final table shows Leeds finishing 14th with 11 wins, 14 draws and 13 defeats, but the underlying numbers paint a slightly more encouraging picture. Their 59.77 xG ranked 10th in the Premier League, while their 56.33 xGA (7th lowest in the division) produced an expected-goal differential of +3.44 across the entire season. Not bad for a side just promoted from the Championship.
In practical terms, Leeds performed much more like a mid-table side than a relegation candidate. Their 49 actual goals fell 10.77 below their xG total, suggesting that even modest improvement in finishing could lift their attacking output without requiring a major tactical change.
The bigger transformation came after Farke altered the defensive structure. Leeds were collecting only 0.79 points per game with a back four, but that rate rose to 1.57 points per game after moving to a back three, a change that helped them move away from the relegation zone and secure survival with three matches remaining.
That second-half improvement matters more than the final position alone. Leeds were not merely fortunate to survive; they found a system that made them substantially more competitive.
Leeds' biggest summer move has come in goal, where the club-record signing of James Trafford addresses a position that became increasingly uncertain last season.
Trafford arrives from Manchester City for around £40 million after making 17 Premier League appearances in 2025/26 and keeping eight clean sheets. His signing follows the departures of Karl Darlow and Illan Meslier and gives Farke a clear first-choice goalkeeper after Lucas Perri struggled to establish himself.
That investment is particularly relevant given the discrepancy between Leeds' actual and expected defensive numbers. They conceded 56 goals from 56.33 xGA, which is hardly a dramatic underperformance, but a stronger goalkeeper behind an already improved defensive shape could be worth several points over the course of the season.
The £34 million arrival of Tarik Muharemovic from Sassuolo also mitigates the loss of Pascal Struijk to Brighton. Leeds have therefore replaced an established defender while simultaneously upgrading the position behind him, rather than allowing one of last season's weaker areas to deteriorate.
The most intriguing addition from a betting perspective may be Harry Wilson. Wilson joins on a free transfer after producing 11 goals and eight assists for Fulham in the 2025/26 Premier League, comfortably the best scoring season of his top-flight career. He gives Leeds a player who can create from wide areas, shoot from distance and contribute from set pieces, while also reducing the creative burden on Brenden Aaronson.
Leeds created enough chances last season but were profligate in front of goal. Now they add a player who overperformed their own xG by 4.24 last season. A player capable of adding goals without needing to operate as the central striker should make the attack less dependent on Dominic Calvert-Lewin remaining fit.
Calvert-Lewin still led Leeds with 14 Premier League goals last season, but his injury history means relying on him as the sole source of finishing would remain a risk. Wilson provides an additional route to goals and should also improve the quality of service from dead-ball situations, an area Leeds were already capable of exploiting.
The main reason to prefer Leeds over several other bottom-half teams is that their improvement does not require a major tactical leap.
Farke has already found a structure that works, and the club has reinforced the positions most likely to determine whether that system remains effective. Trafford should improve the goalkeeping floor, Muharemovic adds another physically capable centre-back and the midfield retains enough experience to protect the defensive line.
Leeds conceded 1.44 xGA per game last season, which was hardly elite but was far removed from the numbers normally associated with a side certain to be involved in a relegation fight. If that figure remains broadly stable while Wilson helps lift an attack that produced plenty of chances, the balance of the team begins to look much closer to mid-table than the bottom three.
There is also evidence that the market may still be anchored to Leeds' status as a recently promoted club. A top-10 finish at +225 requires an implied probability of roughly 31%, yet the gap between Leeds and 10th place last season was relatively small, while their underlying numbers were already competitive with several teams above them.

Leeds do not need a dramatic transformation to reach the top 10. They need marginal improvement in several areas where there is already a plausible mechanism for it.
Trafford should raise the level in goal, Wilson adds production to an attack that slightly underperformed its xG, and Farke begins the season with the defensive structure that took several months to discover last year. The squad also enters 2026/27 with the experience of having already navigated a Premier League relegation battle, rather than having to learn those lessons while simultaneously adapting to the division.
There are still risks. Calvert-Lewin's availability remains important, Struijk's departure removes a familiar presence from the back line and Leeds cannot assume that their excellent results after the formation change will continue at exactly the same rate. Even so, their profile is considerably more stable than the teams we expect to populate the bottom three.
The stronger comparison may therefore be with Everton, Crystal Palace or Nottingham Forest rather than Hull or Ipswich. Leeds finished only two points behind Palace and five behind Everton last season, and their summer business gives them a reasonable chance of closing that gap rather than falling backwards.
