Hull City 2026-27 Premier League Preview: Relegation Odds, Best Bet & Season Outlook

Hull City are back in the Premier League for the first time in nine years, although few promoted teams have arrived with a stranger statistical profile. Sergej Jakirović's side finished sixth in the Championship before beating Millwall in the playoff semi-final and Middlesbrough 1-0 at Wembley, where Oli McBurnie's stoppage-time winner secured promotion. It was an extraordinary achievement for a club that had started the season among the relegation favorites and was operating under a transfer embargo.
The problem for bettors is that almost every underlying number suggests Hull were fortunate to be anywhere near the promotion places. They scored 70 Championship goals despite generating only 59.7 xG, while their opponents produced approximately 80.1 xGA. That gives Hull an extraordinary expected-goal differential of roughly -20.4, even though they still collected enough points to finish sixth. FotMob's expected-goals table effectively ranked them 23rd of 24 Championship teams on the underlying balance, ahead of only Sheffield Wednesday.
That is not simply a warning sign. It is one of the largest discrepancies between results and process among any of the teams promoted to the Premier League in recent seasons. For that reason, the strongest Hull futures angle may not be whether they go down, because the -400 relegation price already reflects enormous pessimism. The more interesting question is which of the three relegation spots they occupy.
Hull's final league position makes more sense when you look at finishing rather than chance creation. Their 59.7 xG produced 70 goals, an overperformance of around 10 goals, while at the other end they conceded 66 despite opponents generating more than 80 xG.
In other words, Hull beat expectation at both ends. McBurnie converted chances at an excellent rate, goalkeeper Ivor Pandur made important saves, and Hull repeatedly found ways to win without dominating possession or territory. McBurnie effectively admitted as much after the playoff final, noting that Hull were comfortable allowing Middlesbrough more of the ball because their entire game plan was based around waiting for the right moment.
That pragmatism deserves credit, but the Premier League presents a completely different scale of problem. Hull will face teams that not only control possession more efficiently but also create far better chances once they establish territorial dominance. If a defense that allowed 80.1 xGA in the Championship carries anything close to that process into the Premier League, the raw concession numbers could become ugly very quickly.
Hull conceded 66 league goals last season, yet even that figure undersold how much pressure they faced. Their 80.1 xGA works out at approximately 1.74 xGA per Championship game, which is already a relegation-level defensive profile before accounting for the jump in attacking quality that the Premier League represents.
Hull also led the Championship in tackles at 17.8 per game, an apparently positive stat that actually says something about how often they were forced to defend without the ball. High defensive activity can reflect aggression and commitment, but when it sits alongside extremely high xGA it often means a team is spending too much time without possession, repeatedly allowing opponents into dangerous areas.
That is unlikely to become easier against Premier League forwards. Hull have therefore spent heavily on rebuilding the back line, with Nobel Mendy arriving from Rayo Vallecano, highly-rated Australian centre-back Lucas Herrington joining from MLS side Colorado Rapids, and experienced full-back Matt Targett added on a free transfer.
Those moves improve the personnel, although asking several new defenders to immediately repair such a weak underlying process is a substantial challenge.
One important counterargument is that this is not exactly the same squad that finished sixth in the Championship. Hull have been far more aggressive in the transfer market than their financial situation initially suggested possible. Reports indicate the club has committed around £78 million to strengthening the squad, while more than 10 new players have arrived.
Hidemasa Morita brings Champions League experience from Sporting, Matt Targett adds more than 100 Premier League appearances, Nobel Mendy strengthens central defense and Konstantinos Tzolakis provides another option in goal.
There is also intrigue around Australian defender Lucas Herrington, who impressed for the Socceroos at the World Cup. The 18-year-old was particularly strong aerially this summer, ranking around the 88th percentile for aerial duels won among defenders, while also posting more than three clearances per 90. His ability to defend his own box should suit a Hull side expected to spend long periods without the ball.
Hull therefore deserve more credit than a simple glance at last season's numbers might suggest. However, much of this recruitment is aimed at fixing obvious weaknesses rather than adding luxury. A team with a -20 xG differential in the Championship needed substantial change merely to become competitive, and assembling 10 or 11 new players creates its own problems around cohesion.
Hull at least know where their goals are supposed to come from. McBurnie scored 17 times in the Championship regular season, then added the promotion-clinching winner at Wembley. His 17 league goals came from approximately 12.3 xG, making him Hull's leading expected-goals contributor by a clear margin.
Joe Gelhardt was next with 14 goals from 11.2 xG, while Kyle Joseph scored eight from 10.1 xG before leaving for Middlesbrough. While 12.3 xG in the Championship is hardly spectacular, McBurnie's profile suits a relegation battle better than it might initially appear. Hull will often play directly, rely on second balls and attack from crosses or set pieces rather than expecting prolonged possession. McBurnie's physicality therefore gives them a focal point even when they are outmatched technically.
The concern is volume. Hull generated only 59.7 xG across 46 Championship matches, or approximately 1.30 per game. That number is likely to drop significantly against Premier League defenses. Even if McBurnie remains an efficient finisher, there may simply not be enough chances available for him to reproduce last season's goal total.
Jakirović deserves significant credit for understanding what his team could and could not do last season. Hull rarely pretended they were capable of dominating stronger opponents through possession. Instead, they defended in numbers, accepted territorial pressure and looked to attack quickly when opportunities appeared. McBurnie's comments after Wembley captured that mentality perfectly: Hull were comfortable without the ball because they believed they could survive pressure and capitalize on one decisive chance.
That approach could make them awkward opponents in individual Premier League fixtures, especially at the MKM Stadium. It also creates some betting angles beyond simply fading Hull every week. Against possession-heavy opponents, Hull +1.5, first-half unders or opponent win-and-under combinations could become interesting if Jakirović retains a conservative structure. The difficulty is sustaining that approach over 38 matches. A team can steal a result while allowing significantly more xG than it creates. Doing it consistently enough to reach 35-40 points is much harder.
The Tigers might have hoped for a light schedule to ease them in to life as a Premier League club, but the fixture computer had other ideas. Their first four league fixtures include Manchester United, Aston Villa, Chelsea and Newcastle, giving Jakirović one of the most difficult starts among the promoted teams.
Manchester United visit the MKM Stadium on opening weekend, with Hull priced around +550 for the upset in one early market, and Polymarket giving them an 11% chance of an unlikely home victory.
A difficult schedule does not automatically determine a season, particularly because promoted teams can approach these games without much external expectation. However, it can quickly create pressure when the squad is still integrating numerous arrivals.
Jakirović is already the +300 favorite to be the first Premier League manager to leave his job, which shows how little patience the market expects if results deteriorate early. For a team that relies heavily on confidence, organization and collective commitment, an opening run of heavy defeats could be particularly damaging.
Hull are currently around -400 to be relegated, representing an implied probability of 80%., with some books even shorter. That may be broadly accurate, but it leaves very little betting value unless you believe Hull's chances of relegation are substantially higher still. The better market may be Hull to finish bottom.
Bookmakers currently have Hull around +120 to +135 to finish bottom, with fellow promoted clubs Ipswich and Coventry both priced considerably longer.
That price asks a more specific question: if Hull's Championship overperformance disappears, are they the weakest of the three promoted teams? The underlying metrics from last season say an emphatic 'yes'. Coventry dominated the Championship with a strongly positive expected-goal differential, while Ipswich's defensive process was among the best in the division. Hull, by contrast, reached the playoffs despite posting an xG differential around -20 and an expected-points profile close to the relegation places. That is a much stronger analytical case than simply saying promoted teams usually struggle.
Hull's player prop markets are likely to be shaped by game state because Jakirović's side should spend long periods without the ball. McBurnie remains the clearest attacking target, while Hull's defensive volume could create value in tackle and clearance markets when sportsbooks offer them.

However, Hull's 59.7 xG and 80.1 xGA suggest sixth place dramatically overstated their underlying performance.
The club has responded sensibly by rebuilding aggressively, particularly in defense, although the scale of the gap makes survival an enormous challenge. New arrivals such as Nobel Mendy, Hidemasa Morita and Matt Targett should improve the squad, but Hull are still asking a largely rebuilt group to adapt immediately to a division where mistakes are punished far more ruthlessly.
At -400, relegation itself is too short to be particularly attractive, making the stronger bet Hull to finish bottom at around +120.

They have already defied that assessment once, asking them to do it again against Premier League opposition is a considerably bigger leap.
