Crystal Palace's 15th-place finish last season looks disappointing when viewed in isolation, particularly after the club followed its historic 2025 FA Cup triumph by winning the Conference League in 2026.
The underlying numbers tell a very different story. Palace finished 11-12-15 with a -10 goal difference, scoring only 41 times despite generating approximately 58.2 xG. Their defense conceded 51 from approximately 51.9 xGA.
That gives Palace one of the clearest finishing-regression cases in the Premier League. They undershot their expected goals by more than 17 goals, while their expected-goal differential was approximately +6.3 despite an actual goal difference of -10.
This was not a team consistently being outplayed and somehow surviving, instead Palace were creating enough chances to finish much higher, but failing to convert them.
That distinction is important when assessing a Top 10 price of +225. The market is asking whether Palace can climb five places from last season, but the advanced metrics suggest the performance gap may be smaller than the table implies.
The most striking number from Palace's 2025/26 campaign is the gap between expected and actual goals.
They generated approximately 58.2 xG but scored only 41 times, an underperformance of around 17 goals.
Only seven Premier League teams generated more open-play xG, yet only one team scored fewer goals overall. Palace's gap between open-play expected goals and actual production was among the worst in Europe's major leagues.
That makes the attacking process easier to defend than the raw goal total. Palace do not necessarily need Pierre Sage to completely redesign the attack, they need more of the existing chances to become goals. Even moderate regression toward expectation could push Palace's scoring total from the low 40s toward the mid-50s, and change the Eagles' outlook substantially.
Oliver Glasner's departure is the biggest source of uncertainty. He left Palace after winning three trophies in 12 months, including the Conference League, before moving to Nottingham Forest. Pierre Sage arrives after leading Lens to second place in Ligue 1 and winning the Coupe de France.
Sage generally favors a 3-4-2-1, making him a relatively natural tactical successor to Glasner rather than a manager likely to tear up the entire structure, something which should help smooth what could still prove a messy transition.
Palace's squad already understands how to operate with Sage's chosen set up, the bigger challenge is maintaining standards after losing important personnel.
Maxence Lacroix has joined Chelsea, while the squad has already undergone significant turnover over the past two summers with the loss of Marc Guehi, Michael Olise and Ebere Eze to Manchester City, Bayern Munich amd Arsenal respectively hampering the club's progress. The transition therefore carries some risk, even if Sage's tactical profile fits.
One of Palace's most interesting additions is Óscar Mingueza.
The former Barcelona defender joined after leaving Celta Vigo and can operate both as the right-sided center-back in a three and as a wing-back. That versatility should make him particularly useful in Sage's preferred structure.
Palace have also added further depth around the squad, while continuing to look for defensive and midfield reinforcement before the window closes.
The immediate issue is replacing Lacroix's combination of recovery speed and ability to defend large spaces. Jaydee Canvot showed immense promise down the stretch last season, slotting in th Marc Guehi's position effortlessly, but replacing Lacroix as well could prove a challenge, one Palace will hope Mingueza can accomplish.
Palace conceded almost exactly as many goals as their xGA predicted last season, so there is little obvious defensive regression to worry about, but that is based on a Glasner defence including one or both of Guehi and Lacroix in the lineup.
Their 51.9 xGA works out at roughly 1.37 per match. That is not elite, but it is perfectly manageable for a mid-table side if the attack starts converting chances closer to expectation.
Palace's Conference League success means another season of Thursday-night football, this time in the Europa League.
That matters when evaluating a Top 10 bet. European competition adds travel, rotation and shorter recovery periods, and Palace do not have the depth of the Premier League's richest clubs. The squad remains strong enough to stay clear of trouble, but maintaining consistency across four competitions will test Sage immediately.
This is one reason the market remains cautious. bet365 currently prices Palace at +225 to finish in the Top 10, while relegation is around +550.
Those prices effectively position Palace closer to the lower half than the European places. That feels understandable given the managerial transition and squad turnover. It may also leave some upside if their finishing normalizes.
Jean-Philippe Mateta remains the focal point of Palace's attack. He scored 12 Premier League goals last season, leading the club, while generating approximately 0.59 xG per 90. He also led Palace at roughly 2.6 shots and 1.3 shots on target per 90.
Those numbers are important because Palace's wider finishing problems were not simply caused by an inability to create for their striker. Mateta continued to receive high-quality chances, after his recovery from injury and transfer-related exile in January last season.
His combined expected goals and assists rate of approximately 0.64 per 90 was comfortably the best in the squad, and keeping him fit and involved should give Palace a dependable central reference point even as Sage reshapes the attack around him.
Ismaïla Sarr may ultimately be the player who determines how high Palace can climb. He scored nine league goals last season and averaged approximately 0.45 xG and 0.50 xG+xA per 90, and his World Cup only strengthened the argument. Sarr scored four times for Senegal and returns to Palace after one of the strongest stretches of his career. The combination of direct running, transition speed and the ability to attack space behind defenses makes him particularly useful for Sage. If Palace's broader finishing improves, Sarr could comfortably move into double figures.

The expected-goal difference is the figure that makes the Top 10 market interesting. Palace performed much more like a mid-table team than their 15th-place finish suggests, but there are legitimate reasons to remain cautious. Glasner and Lacroix are gone. Sage is entering his first Premier League season, and Palace only need to look to last season's domestic struggles for proof of the strains of European football.
But Palace do not need to suddenly become a European-level league side for a top 10 finish. They need their attack to finish closer to expectation while the defense remains roughly stable.
Palace's best player prop angles come from established shot volume rather than trying to predict which attacker benefits most from positive finishing regression. Mateta has the strongest statistical floor, while Sarr and Pino both offer upside if Palace's attack converts more efficiently.

Mateta remains the cleanest prop target because both his shot volume and chance quality are established, while Pino's 0.46 xG+xA per 90 compared with only two goals and two assists gives him an interesting positive-regression profile.
