Brighton have reached the point where finishing in the top half of the Premier League no longer feels particularly surprising. Fabian Hürzeler's side finished eighth with 53 points last season and secured another season of European football through the Conference League. The final position was encouraging, but the underlying data provides an even stronger reason to believe Brighton can remain around the European places.
Brighton scored 52 Premier League goals from 56.74 xG, while conceding 46 from approximately 51.04 xGA. They therefore finished with a +6 actual goal difference and an expected-goal difference of roughly +5.7.
Brighton's eighth-place finish was not built on a huge finishing streak or an unsustainable run of defensive results. Their actual and expected goal differences were almost identical. That, accompanied with some interesting off-season acquisitions provides a solid foundation for another top-half challenge.
The attacking numbers are perhaps the most encouraging part of Brighton's profile.They scored 52 times despite generating 56.74 xG, meaning the Seagulls left roughly five goals on the table relative to the quality of their chances.
Brighton also attempted 494 shots, averaging exactly 13.0 per match, with 176 hitting the target. Their 4.63 shots on target per game ranked 4th in the division last season, and demonstrates that this was not simply a team accumulating speculative efforts from poor positions.
Their average attempt carried approximately 0.11 xG, putting Brighton around the middle of the Premier League for chance quality. The more interesting number is the amount of attacking output they generated from open play. Brighton recorded approximately 34.34 open-play xG, only two goals fewer than champions Arsenal.
They therefore do not need a dramatic tactical overhaul to increase their scoring total. If Brighton continue creating roughly 57 xG and simply finish closer to expectation, there is scope for the attack to move into the high-50s or low-60s without generating substantially more chances. That is one of the strongest arguments supporting their Top 10 prospects.
There is, however, an obvious complication. Danny Welbeck was Brighton's leading Premier League scorer last season with 13 goals, while also leading the squad with 56 shots and 28 shots on target, but he departed the club on a free this summer and has since moved to Chelsea.
That removes the team's most reliable finisher and highest-volume shooter. Brighton are therefore not simply waiting for positive finishing regression from the same attacking group, and Hürzeler will need younger forwards to absorb Welbeck's minutes and shot volume.
That puts considerably more responsibility on Georginio Rutter, Yankuba Minteh and, most interestingly, Charalampos Kostoulas. Kostoulas managed only 17 league appearances last season, but his underlying numbers were extremely promising. He led Brighton at approximately 0.54 xG per 90, narrowly ahead of Welbeck's 0.49.
The sample is small, so it would be premature to project that rate across a full season. But it gives Brighton a potential internal replacement rather than forcing them to replace all of Welbeck's output externally.
Brighton's defensive numbers were good without being elite. They allowed approximately 51.04 xGA over the season, or roughly 1.34 per match, before conceding 46 actual goals.
That represents modest defensive overperformance, but nothing extreme enough to undermine the overall profile. The larger concern is turnover in personnel. Jan Paul van Hecke has joined Tottenham after establishing himself as one of Brighton's most important defenders, while James Milner (retired) and several other experienced players have also left the club. But just as they always have under Tony Bloom and Jamestown Analytics, Brighton have moved quickly and decisively to fil the void left by the highly-rated Van Hecke.
The headline addition is Luka Vušković, signed from Tottenham after an impressive loan season at Hamburg in Germany. The Croatian center-back scored six Bundesliga goals last season and arrives with an unusual combination of physical size, aerial threat and comfort in possession.
Brighton have also strengthened the wider defensive unit, reflecting a clear attempt to avoid allowing the loss of Van Hecke to weaken the entire structure. Pascal Struijk has arrived for £15 million ($20 million) adding Premier League experience, with right-back Costinha and centre-half Michael Svoboda also joining the Seagulls to improve their strength in depth at the back.
This does , however, represent a major overhaul of one position group, and the success of this defensive transition may determine whether Brighton push toward the top six or settle closer to eighth or ninth again.
One area Brighton can improve is their away performance. They generated 27.72 away xG and allowed 28.26 xGA across 19 road matches, giving them a virtually neutral expected-goal differential away from the Amex. They averaged 12.26 shots and 4.32 shots on target per away match, slightly below their overall season averages.
That is not disastrous, but Brighton's ambitions now extend beyond simply establishing themselves in mid-table. To become a regular top-six challenger, they need to turn more of those relatively even away matches into wins. The difference between eighth and sixth is often not dominance against elite teams. It is converting games against mid-table opponents when the underlying numbers are close. That makes Brighton's road performance one of the trends to monitor during the opening months of the season.
Brighton will also have to balance domestic competition with the Europa Conference League. Their previous European campaign in 2023/24 demonstrated how quickly additional fixtures can expose squad depth, and Hürzeler will have to rotate more frequently than he did during stretches of last season.
The Conference League is less demanding than the Champions League, but Thursday-Sunday scheduling can still have a significant effect on Premier League performance. For bettors, this creates a straightforward situational angle.
Brighton may be a team to approach cautiously in Sunday league matches immediately following European away games, particularly if Hürzeler has used several first-team players on Thursday. The depth of Brighton's squad should prevent European football from becoming a major negative, but it makes another eighth-place finish more complicated than simply repeating last season's underlying numbers.
There is little in Brighton's 2025/26 data that screams major regression:
Brighton actually scored fewer goals than their xG suggested while conceding slightly fewer than expected. The two effects largely cancelled one another out.
That makes them very different from a team whose league position was driven by extreme finishing or goalkeeping. The uncertainty is mostly personnel-based. Welbeck was the leading scorer and has gone. Van Hecke was a major defensive presence and has also left, while European football adds another demand.
But Brighton's recruitment model is designed around precisely this type of turnover. Vušković has significant upside, Kostoulas has already shown an excellent xG rate in limited Premier League minutes and Hürzeler is entering his third season with a new long-term contract.
The market currently makes Brighton around -187 to finish in the top half, with prices around +350 for the Top 6 and +1200 for the Top 4. The Top 10 price is not particularly generous, but it is the market best supported by the data.
Brighton can finish ninth or tenth, absorb the loss of two major starters and still finish in the top half.
Welbeck's departure leaves a significant amount of shot volume available, making Brighton one of the more interesting teams to monitor for early-season prop changes. Kostoulas has the highest upside if his minutes increase, while Rutter and Minteh should also take on greater attacking responsibility.

Brighton's eighth-place finish last season looks highly sustainable when viewed through the underlying numbers. Their +5.7 expected-goal differential was almost identical to their +6 actual goal difference, while 56.74 xG suggests there was actually some attacking production left unrealized.
There are more questions than the raw numbers initially suggest, however. Welbeck's departure removes 13 goals and the team's highest shot volume, while Van Hecke leaves a significant hole in central defense, and Vuskovic will need to adapt quickly to Premier League football. European football will also test a squad that now needs several young players to take on larger roles.
Brighton's recruitment history gives them more reason for optimism than most clubs facing that level of turnover. Kostoulas' 0.54 xG per 90 makes him a particularly intriguing candidate to absorb some of Welbeck's scoring responsibility, while Vušković provides a high-upside replacement at the other end.
At +15000, there is no meaningful argument for Brighton as title contenders. A Top 6 bet is much more interesting but still requires another substantial step forward. The Top 10 market is the safer expression of what the underlying data tells us: Brighton were genuinely a top-half team last season and have enough talent to remain one in 2026/27.
