Brentford continue to make a habit of outperforming preseason expectations. Keith Andrews inherited a team that had lost Thomas Frank, Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa and were being tipped for relegation by some before the 2025/26 season, yet the Bees still finished ninth with 53 points, missing European qualification only on the final day.
More importantly for bettors, the underlying numbers broadly supported that finish. Brentford scored 55 goals from approximately 59.9 xG while conceding 52 from around 54.4 xGA. Their expected-goal difference was therefore roughly +5.5, compared with an actual goal difference of +3.
That is a useful starting point for assessing them this season. There was no enormous finishing overperformance propping up their league position, nor did they survive by repeatedly conceding fewer goals than the chances they allowed suggested. Their 53 actual points also matched the 53 points assigned to them by one expected-points model.
Brentford may not have the ceiling of the Premier League's biggest clubs, but there is little evidence that last season's top-half finish was simply a statistical fluke.
The clearest split in Brentford's 2025/26 data came between home and away matches.
At the Gtech Community Stadium, the Bees went 8-8-3, scoring 33 goals and losing only three of their 19 league games. They generated 37.04 xG while allowing 24.09 xGA.
Away from home, the numbers dropped substantially.
Brentford went 6-3-10 on the road, scoring 22 goals while conceding 31. Their away attacking output fell to 22.89 xG, with opponents generating 30.33 xGA against them.
That difference gives bettors a useful framework for approaching Brentford throughout 2026/27.
The Bees should not automatically be priced like a conventional mid-table side at home. Their pressing intensity, physicality and ability to create dead-ball pressure make the Gtech a difficult venue, and their underlying home numbers support that reputation.
Brentford moneyline and draw-no-bet markets at home may therefore offer more appeal than backing them indiscriminately across a full season.
The reverse applies away from home, where their defensive numbers were much less convincing.
One of the biggest uncertainties entering last season was whether Brentford's identity would survive Thomas Frank's departure, a question which was emphatically answered by Keith Andrews and his staff.
Andrews retained the aggressive pressing and direct attacking style that had become central to the club's Premier League success, while adding his own ideas around dead-ball situations. That continuity is important heading into his second season at the helm.
Brentford remain at their best when they can force turnovers high up the pitch, attack quickly and make opponents defend repeated crosses, second balls and set plays. New signing Mamadou Sangaré appears particularly well suited to that approach.
The Mali international arrives from Lens for a club-record fee reported at around £39 million after helping the French side finish second in Ligue 1 and win the Coupe de France. His defensive activity is the most interesting part of the profile. Among players in Europe's major leagues last season, Sangaré ranked in the 93rd percentile for Possessions Won, and the 90th percentile in Duel Success.
Adding that type of ball-winner to an already aggressive pressing system could allow Brentford to spend more time attacking from advantageous situations rather than building slowly against settled defenses.
Brentford remain one of the Premier League's most interesting set-piece teams. Across the season they generated approximately 18.33 set-piece xG, with 11.65 coming at home and 6.68 away, but still left plenty on the table.
Brentford scored only 10 set-play goals, their joint-lowest total in a Premier League season, despite no team generating a greater share of its shots through free kicks, corners and throw-ins. That creates a potential positive-regression angle.
The underlying process was there. The finishing was not.
Andrews previously worked as Brentford's set-piece coach, so there is little reason to expect the club to abandon an area in which they deliberately invest significant tactical attention.
If they continue generating set-piece chances at last season's rate, scoring only 10 times again would be a relatively conservative expectation.
This also makes Brentford team-goal markets against weak set-piece defenses worth monitoring, especially at home.
Igor Thiago was one of the biggest individual success stories in the Premier League last season.
The Brazilian scored 22 league goals, with only Erling Haaland finishing ahead of him in the scoring charts.
But his underlying numbers require a little caution.
Thiago scored those 22 goals from approximately 14.6 non-penalty xG, meaning he beat his expected scoring output by more than seven goals.
That level of finishing is unlikely to be automatically repeatable.
It does not mean Thiago suddenly becomes a poor goalscorer bet. His role is secure, Brentford consistently create situations suited to his physical profile and he remains their main penalty-box target.
But bettors should distinguish between a good striker and an expectation that 22 goals becomes his annual baseline.
That difference matters when evaluating Golden Boot prices. Thiago is currently around +1000 in that market, placing him among the leading contenders after last season's breakthrough.
At that price, bettors are paying heavily for last season's finishing.
His shot and shots-on-target markets may provide a more flexible way to back his involvement on a match-by-match basis.
If there is a clear area for improvement, it is open-play creation.
Brentford generated nearly 60 xG last season, but an unusually large amount of their attacking activity originated from dead-ball situations. They attempted 405 shots overall, with 147 on target.
The arrival of Sangaré should help them win the ball higher up the pitch, while Dango Ouattara and Mikkel Damsgaard provide two different routes to creating chances.
Ouattara averaged approximately 2.21 shots per 90 last season with a non-penalty xG rate of 0.34 per 90, giving Brentford a genuine secondary scoring threat around Thiago.
Damsgaard is much more of a creator. He recorded around 5.4 xA last season and led Brentford at approximately 0.24 xA per 90.
If those players can generate more consistent open-play production, Brentford become much less dependent on set pieces and Thiago converting chances at an exceptional rate.
That would substantially strengthen the case for another top-half finish.

Perhaps the most encouraging number is the expected-points total. Brentford's 53 actual points matched their 53 expected points, suggesting ninth place was broadly consistent with the overall quality of their performances.
There are reasons for caution.
Thiago's finishing is likely to regress toward his underlying xG, Jordan Henderson has departed and opposing managers now have a full season of Andrews' Brentford to study.
But the Bees also have several advantages heading into 2026/27.
They have no European schedule to manage, Andrews has retained the core of the team, Sangaré strengthens the midfield and their set-piece output arguably has room to improve.
Current markets make Brentford around +138 to finish in the top half at one major sportsbook, while other books are considerably shorter.
At plus money, that is the market I prefer.
They have finished in the top 10 in three of the past four seasons, and another ninth or tenth-place finish is enough to cash the ticket.
Brentford's prop profile is centered on Thiago's penalty-box role, Ouattara's shooting volume and Damsgaard's chance creation. Sangaré also has enough shooting involvement from midfield to become an interesting low-line prop if his Lens role carries over to England.

Brentford's ninth-place finish last season was another impressive result, but unlike some teams that exceeded expectations, the underlying metrics largely backed it up.
Their +5.5 expected-goal differential and 53 expected points suggest this was genuinely a top-half-caliber team rather than one surviving on unusually favorable results.
There are still areas where regression could hit. Thiago scored significantly more goals than his xG suggested, while Brentford's away defensive numbers were considerably weaker than their home performances.
But there are positive-regression possibilities too.
The Bees generated 18.33 set-piece xG but scored only 10 set-play goals, while Sangaré should strengthen a pressing system that already produces plenty of turnovers and territorial pressure.
That combination makes another top-half finish realistic.
Brentford are not credible title contenders at +25000, but they do not need to be. At around +138 for a Top 10 finish, the market simply asks Andrews' side to remain roughly where the underlying data said they belonged last season.
