Tottenham Hotspur 2026-27 Premier League Preview: Best Bet & Season Outlook

Tottenham spent the previous two seasons demonstrating how quickly one of England's richest clubs can drift toward irrelevance. After consecutive 17th-place Premier League finishes, Spurs have responded with the kind of rebuild normally associated with a team trying to reach the Champions League rather than simply escape the bottom six.
Roberto De Zerbi has taken charge, while Sandro Tonali, Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes and Andy Robertson have all arrived as Tottenham attempt to rebuild both their midfield and defensive structure. The important question is whether all that investment can overcome a starting point that was significantly worse than Tottenham's reputation suggests.
Spurs finished with only 41 points, while their underlying numbers were similarly poor: 42.53 xG against 50.90 xGA, producing a -8.37 expected-goal differential. That hardly looks like the foundation of a Champions League contender.
However, the squad has changed considerably, De Zerbi is a strong stylistic fit and Tottenham also have the benefit of no European football in 2026/27. At +110, Tottenham to finish in the top six is therefore one of the more interesting bounce-back bets of the season.
There is a temptation to treat last season as an aberration because Spurs are Tottenham and 17th feels inherently unsustainable for a club of their resources. The underlying data does not really support that interpretation. They scored 48 goals from only 42.53 xG, meaning the attack actually finished about 5.5 goals above expectation. At the other end, they conceded 57 from 50.90 xGA, so there was some defensive underperformance but nowhere near enough to explain the entire campaign.
Across 38 matches, Spurs averaged approximately 1.12 xG per game, while allowing 1.34 xGA. They also attempted 435 shots, with 146 on target, while averaging 50.4% possession.
Going forward, Spurs were woeful, and ranked only 17th in the Premier League for expected goals. This proves that their league position last yearcannot be dismissed as poor finishing or bad luck. Spurs, frankly, did not create enough. That is why this season has to be evaluated as a rebuild rather than a positive-regression play. The case for the top six depends on Tottenham becoming substantially better, not simply waiting for last season's results to normalize.
That requirement is precisely why Roberto De Zerbi's arrival matters so much. Tottenham spent much of last season lacking a coherent method of progressing possession through midfield and into the final third. Their 42.53 xG reflected a side that could have the ball without consistently converting possession into dangerous chances.
De Zerbi's football is designed around solving that problem. His teams deliberately invite pressure during buildup before attempting to play through it, creating space further forward once opponents commit players toward the ball. He is particularly demanding about the positioning of central midfielders and the players receiving between the lines. That philosophy should immediately give Spurs a more recognizable attacking identity.
The challenge is that De Zerbi is taking over after another season of managerial turmoil, rather than inheriting the kind of settled project he previously developed at Brighton. Tottenham's ceiling will therefore depend not only on the quality of their signings but also on how quickly those players absorb a demanding positional system.

No signing better illustrates Tottenham's ambition than Sandro Tonali. Spurs completed a club-record £92.5 million initial deal for Tonali, with De Zerbi convincing his fellow Italian to become one of the central pieces of the rebuild.
Tonali’s value is much clearer in the progression data than in his goals and assists. He completed 46.85 passes per 90 for Newcastle last season and played more than 18 successful passes into the final third per 90, while also averaging around 5.2 recoveries and 2.3 tackles plus interceptions per 90. That combination of press resistance, progression and defensive activity makes him an unusually natural fit for De Zerbi’s midfield, where receiving under pressure and moving possession through the center of the pitch are fundamental.
The addition of Mateus Fernandes gives De Zerbi a very different midfield profile alongside Tonali. Fernandes recorded 103 Premier League tackles for West Ham last season, the highest total of any West Ham player, while also contributing three goals and four assists in 36 appearances. He also won 67 of those tackles, illustrating the kind of defensive activity Tottenham are adding to the center of the pitch.
De Zerbi's system needs midfielders capable of covering ground and stopping transitions before they develop into defensive emergencies, and Fernandes should provide much of that. He and Tonali also look complementary rather than redundant. Tonali offers control and progression, while Fernandes adds ball-winning, mobility and box-to-box energy.
For a Tottenham midfield that frequently lacked both authority and balance last season, that pairing is one of the strongest reasons to expect improvement.
The summer investment has not stopped in midfield. Tottenham have added Jan Paul van Hecke and Andy Robertson, while Marcos Senesi has also arrived to add Premier League experience to the center of defense. Senesi could prove an essential signing after Cristian Romero's departure because his style is considerably calmer in possession.
Van Hecke, meanwhile, already understands many of the principles De Zerbi will demand after working with him at Brighton. That familiarity should help Tottenham build from the back more effectively, while Micky van de Ven's recovery speed remains an important safeguard whenever the defensive line pushes higher.
Pedro Porro also provides considerable attacking upside from full-back. He generated 4.04 xA last season despite finishing with only two assists, suggesting his creative contribution could easily produce better raw numbers if Tottenham's finishing improves.
For all the attention on Tottenham's midfield rebuild, the attack remains the area that determines whether the top-six bet succeeds. Spurs produced just 42.53 xG last season. That is not a figure from which a team drifts naturally into European contention. Even reaching roughly 55 xG would require an increase of more than 12 expected goals across the season, while genuine top-four contenders typically operate higher still.
Richarlison at least offers some proven finishing, having led Tottenham with 11 Premier League goals last season, but Spurs still appear determined to add more attacking quality.
A £75 million agreement for Manchester City winger Savinho has been reported, and Spurs remain locked in talks with Manchester City over Omar Marmoush.
If Savinho arrives, De Zerbi gains another player capable of carrying the ball, isolating defenders and stretching deeper defensive blocks, while Marmoush can provide the thrust from central channels that has been missing since Son's decline and departure in 2025. That would materially strengthen the top-six case because last season's biggest statistical weakness was not finishing. It was getting into dangerous positions often enough.
Player | Key Metric / Angle | Target Market |
|---|---|---|
Richarlison | Team-high 11 Premier League goals last season | 2+ Shots / 1+ Shot on Target |
Pedro Porro | 4.04 xA despite only two assists | Assist Props / To Score or Assist |
Mateus Fernandes | 103 tackles, including 67 won | Tackle Props |
Sandro Tonali | Central No. 6/8 role in De Zerbi's buildup | 1+ Shot / Passing Props |
Tottenham's case for 2026/27 is unusual because almost none of it rests on positive regression. They finished 17th with 41 points, while 42.53 xG against 50.90 xGA broadly confirms that their performances belonged in the bottom half.
The bullish argument is instead about transformation. Roberto De Zerbi gives Spurs a coach whose football directly addresses their problems progressing possession, while the club-record signing of Sandro Tonali and the arrival of Mateus Fernandes completely reshape the midfield.
Van Hecke and Senesi strengthen the defense, while Savinho and Marmoush can add pace, ball-carrying ability and wide creativity that was lacking last season. Most importantly, De Zerbi has full training weeks to put those ideas together because Spurs have no European football.
There are enough uncertainties to avoid the more aggressive top-four market. Tottenham still need to improve their attacking process dramatically, integrate several major signings and turn a 41-point team into something capable of challenging for Europe.
However, Spurs do not need to become title contenders. They need to become the strongest team immediately below the main Champions League group, and their combination of recruitment, coaching quality and schedule gives them a realistic route to doing exactly that.
At around +110, Tottenham to finish in the top six is the cleaner way to back the rebuild.
