Sunderland were arguably the story of the 2025/26 Premier League season. Promoted through the Championship playoffs and widely expected to go straight back down, Régis Le Bris instead guided them to seventh place with 54 points, European qualification and two memorable league victories over Newcastle.
There is plenty of evidence that the project itself remains healthy. Le Bris is still in charge, Sunderland have retained much of the squad that performed so well last season and Granit Xhaka remains central to the team. This continuity lends plenty of ammunition to those who think the Black Cats can repeat last season's exploits.
The statistical argument is considerably less comfortable. Sunderland generated only 39.06 xG while allowing 53.75 xGA, leaving them with a -14.69 expected-goal differential despite finishing seventh. Their chance creation was among the weakest in the Premier League, while their expected-goal balance looked far more like that of a bottom-half side than a European qualifier.
Add a Europa League schedule to that profile and Sunderland to be relegated at +300 becomes one of the more interesting contrarian futures on the board.
The gap between Sunderland's league position and underlying process was enormous. They scored 42 goals from 39.06 xG, so their attacking finishing was not particularly unsustainable. The more remarkable element was how many points Sunderland extracted while consistently losing the expected-goal battle.
Their 53.75 xGA against 39.06 xG produced a -14.69 xGD, equivalent to approximately:
Those are not numbers normally associated with seventh place.
Sunderland also attempted only 396 shots, or 10.42 per game, reinforcing the idea that they rarely overwhelmed Premier League opponents through attacking volume. The contrast with the clubs around them is important. Bournemouth finished above Sunderland with a positive expected-goal differential, while Brighton and Brentford also produced healthier chance profiles despite ending the campaign lower in the table.
Sunderland were therefore not merely a slightly fortunate seventh-place team. Their final position substantially overstated the quality of their underlying process.
Sunderland conceded only 48 goals, and that defensive resilience was fundamental to their success. However, the underlying number was less impressive.
Their 53.75 xGA suggests they prevented roughly six more goals than the quality of chances conceded would ordinarily imply. That is not an extreme level of overperformance, particularly with Robin Roefs establishing himself as a strong Premier League goalkeeper, but it means Sunderland's defensive record was closer to good than elite.
The bigger problem emerges when that defensive profile is paired with the attack. A team allowing around 1.41 xGA per game can still finish comfortably in mid-table if it consistently generates 1.5 or 1.6 xG at the other end. Sunderland generated only 1.03.
That leaves very little margin for defensive regression. If the goals conceded move closer to the underlying figure while the attack remains around 40 xG, even a relatively small deterioration could translate into a large points swing. Their actual goal difference was only -6 despite finishing seventh. The expected-goal difference was nearly nine goals worse again. That is why the regression case deserves more weight than Sunderland's final league position suggests.
The most obvious route to proving the bearish case wrong is attacking improvement. Sunderland scored only 42 Premier League goals, while their 39.06 xG suggests the limited scoring was broadly a reflection of the chances they created rather than simply poor finishing.
Le Bris often prioritized defensive structure and controlled transitions over committing large numbers forward, which made sense for a newly promoted team. Sunderland were difficult to play through and dangerous when matches opened up, but they struggled to consistently create high-quality opportunities against settled defenses.
That is the area that has to progress in year two. Unlike a team that scores 42 goals from 55 xG, Sunderland cannot simply point to finishing regression and expect another 10 goals to appear. Their attack has to generate more chances. The addition of Europa League football could make that development more difficult because Le Bris will have less uninterrupted training time and a greater need to rotate.
Brian Brobbey's first Premier League season was encouraging without being prolific.
The Dutch striker scored seven goals from 6.36 xG in 1,927 league minutes, taking 36 shots and putting 18 on target.
That works out at approximately:
Those are useful numbers, although the shot volume needs to increase if Brobbey is going to develop into a 12-to-15-goal Premier League striker. His physical style suits Sunderland's football particularly well because he can protect possession, occupy center-backs and provide a direct route up the pitch when Le Bris' side cannot progress cleanly through midfield. His development has also been helped by an increasingly important international role, where he has forced his way into the team as central striker for the Netherlands.
However, Sunderland's broader problem is not necessarily whether Brobbey can finish. It is whether they can consistently get him into enough dangerous positions. His 6.36 xG across more than 1,900 minutes reflects that limitation. Even an excellent finisher will struggle to post a major scoring season if the service leaves him around 0.30 xG per 90.
The strongest argument against Sunderland being relegated is the amount of continuity they have retained. Granit Xhaka remains at the heart of Le Bris' midfield and led Sunderland with six Premier League assists last season. His experience, positioning and ability to control the tempo were particularly important for a squad containing several players experiencing the Premier League for the first time.
Enzo Le Fée, Noah Sadiki, Chris Rigg, Nordi Mukiele and Robin Roefs remain, while Le Bris enters another season with a group already familiar with his tactical expectations. Continuity makes a catastrophic collapse less likely, but it does not remove the statistical risk.
A well-coached team with good dressing-room chemistry can still struggle if the chance balance remains heavily negative, particularly when its schedule becomes significantly more demanding. The optimistic case therefore rests on a young squad improving enough to make last season's xG profile obsolete. At +300, however, bettors are being compensated for the possibility that it does not happen quickly enough.
Le Fée is one of the players capable of raising Sunderland's attacking ceiling. He produced five goals and six assists across 36 Premier League appearances, while taking 36 shots and putting 12 on target.
Three of those goals came from penalties, so his open-play scoring output was relatively modest, but his technical ability gives Sunderland a player capable of receiving between the lines and creating in areas where the team often lacked quality last season.
The important development is whether Le Fée can turn more of those possessions into high-value chances. Sunderland do not necessarily need Brobbey to suddenly become a 20-goal striker if Le Fée, Rigg, Sadiki and Xhaka collectively improve the supply into the penalty area. That is where the age profile of the squad creates upside. Several important players are still developing, so treating last season's 39.06 xG as a fixed ceiling would be too simplistic. The problem is that the improvement required is substantial.
This is the biggest new variable. Sunderland have qualified for European competition for the first time since the 1970s, meaning Le Bris must now prepare the squad for regular Thursday-Sunday scheduling.
For an established European squad, those demands are manageable, but for Sunderland, they are new. Many members of the squad have never completed a full season combining Premier League and European football, while Le Bris will have significantly less time on the training ground to refine the attacking structures Sunderland need to improve.
The squad has also had an unusually demanding summer, with 12 Sunderland players involved at the 2026 World Cup. That does not guarantee fatigue or injuries, but it reduces the recovery window before another demanding campaign. A team that already generated a negative xG differential while largely playing once a week now has to improve those numbers while managing considerably more football. That is central to the relegation thesis.
The summer transfer window also looks markedly different from the rebuild that prepared Sunderland for their return to the Premier League.
At the time of writing, Thomas Meunier is the club's most notable senior addition. The experienced Belgian brings substantial top-level experience and useful depth, but a veteran right-back does little to address the underlying weakness in Sunderland's attacking numbers.
The club still has time to strengthen before the deadline, and one high-level attacking addition could materially change the outlook.
As things stand, however, Le Bris is largely being asked to extract organic improvement from the same core group that generated last season's concerning xG profile.
That becomes more demanding when Europa League matches are added to the schedule.
At +300, Sunderland's implied relegation probability is 25%. You do not need to believe Sunderland are more likely than not to go down for that to represent value. You need to believe their real probability is materially higher than one chance in four.
There is a reasonable case for that. The warning signs include:
Against that, Sunderland have continuity, a highly rated manager, several young players capable of improving and a squad that has already proved it can outperform expectations. That tension is precisely what makes the price attractive. If Sunderland were obviously poor, they would be priced alongside Hull, instead, the question is whether the strengths that carried them last season can continue to overcome an underlying statistical profile that looked much closer to the bottom half.
At +300, I would rather take the price on regression.
Player | Key Metric / Angle | Target Market |
|---|---|---|
Brian Brobbey | 7 goals from 6.36 xG; 18 SOT from 36 shots | 1+ Shot on Target / Anytime Goalscorer |
Enzo Le Fée | 5 goals, 6 assists; 36 shots | To Score or Assist / 1+ Shot |
Granit Xhaka | Team-high 6 league assists; major set-piece role | Assist Props / 1+ Shot |
Wilson Isidor | Direct transition threat and useful rotation option | 1+ SOT / Anytime Goalscorer when starting |
Sunderland deserve enormous credit for what they achieved last season, and there are genuine reasons to believe the club is better equipped than the underlying numbers alone imply.
Le Bris remains one of the league's more interesting coaches, Xhaka has stayed, the core of the squad remains intact and players such as Brobbey, Le Fée, Rigg and Sadiki still have room to improve. The disruption caused by international tournaments also provides some context for Sunderland's weaker stretches.
But betting requires separating achievement from repeatability. Sunderland finished seventh despite generating only 39.06 xG against 53.75 xGA, producing a -14.69 expected-goal differential. That underlying balance was much closer to a relegation battle than European qualification.
They now have to improve that process while managing Europa League football and the aftermath of a World Cup summer, while the transfer window has so far added relatively little to the core squad. Sunderland may outperform the numbers again, but doing so sufficiently to remain comfortable requires another season of excellent execution.
At +300, Sunderland to be relegated is the more attractive side of that equation. Hull and Ipswich remain my two clearest candidates for the drop, but Sunderland are the team I would back to complete the bottom three rather than assuming all three promoted clubs immediately return to the Championship.
