10 Greatest College Football Quarterbacks of All Time

Ranking the greatest college football quarterbacks of all time is harder than it sounds. How do you compare Joe Burrow’s historic 2019 season to Tim Tebow’s four years at Florida, or today’s passing numbers to what quarterbacks were putting up 30 or 40 years ago?
There’s no perfect formula, so I considered production relative to each player’s era, individual awards, peak performance, team success and overall impact on college football. NFL careers don’t factor into the rankings, and while championships matter, I didn’t want to punish great quarterbacks just because they weren’t surrounded by a championship-level team.
With that in mind, here are my 10 greatest college football quarterbacks of all time.
As someone born on this side of the 21st century, Tim Tebow was one of the first college football superstars I remember watching. Almost 20 years later, I still don't think another quarterback has put together a better college career.
Tebow became the first underclassman to win the Heisman Trophy in 2007, throwing 32 touchdowns and running for another 23. He went on to finish in the top five of Heisman voting three straight years during an era that featured guys like Colt McCoy, Matt Ryan and Matthew Stafford.
My favorite Tebow stat might be his 57 career rushing touchdowns. A quarterback scored more times on the ground than Herschel Walker, Bo Jackson, Emmitt Smith, Nick Chubb and Derrick Henry did during their SEC careers. He could throw it, too, finishing with 88 passing touchdowns and just 16 interceptions.
Tebow won two national championships at Florida, and he played a real role in both. As a true freshman in 2006, he scored 13 touchdowns and added a passing and rushing TD in Florida’s 41-14 win over No. 1 Ohio State in the national championship game. Two years later, he led the Gators back to the title, beating Heisman winner Sam Bradford and No. 1 Oklahoma 24-14 in the championship game.
Other quarterbacks on this list may have had a better single season, but Tebow did it for too long and in too many different ways for me to put anyone else at No. 1.
If this were a ranking of the greatest individual seasons by a college quarterback, Cam Newton might be No. 1. After barely seeing the field at Florida and spending a year at Blinn College, Newton arrived at Auburn in 2010 and went 14-0 with a Heisman Trophy and national championship in his only season as the starter.
Newton accounted for 51 touchdowns that year, throwing for 2,854 yards and 30 TDs while adding 1,473 yards and 20 scores on the ground. He became the first SEC player with 2,000 passing and 1,000 rushing yards in the same season and even caught a touchdown for good measure.
Some of his best performances came when Auburn needed them most. Newton ran for 217 yards against No. 6 LSU, helped erase a 24-0 deficit at Alabama in the Iron Bowl and accounted for six touchdowns in a 56-17 win over South Carolina in the SEC Championship Game.
Auburn finished the job by beating No. 2 Oregon 22-19 for its first national championship since 1957. Newton only gave us one full FBS season as a starter, which is ultimately why I have Tebow ahead of him, but I'm not sure we've ever seen a quarterback take over a college football season quite like Newton did in 2010.
Like Cam Newton, Joe Burrow is this high largely because of one unforgettable season. After a solid first year at LSU, Burrow exploded in 2019, completing 76.3% of his passes for 5,671 yards, 60 touchdowns and just six interceptions while leading the Tigers to a 15-0 national championship season.
Those numbers somehow became even more ridiculous when the games mattered most. Burrow threw seven touchdown passes in the first half against Oklahoma in the College Football Playoff semifinal, then accounted for six more touchdowns and 521 total yards against defending champion Clemson in the national championship game.
Burrow didn't just win the Heisman, either. He won by the largest margin in Heisman voting history, finishing well ahead of a field that included Jalen Hurts, Justin Fields and Chase Young. That came after LSU knocked off Texas, Florida, Auburn, Alabama and Georgia before beating Oklahoma and Clemson in the playoff.
Newton gets the slight edge for me because of what he added as a runner, but Burrow's 2019 season has a real argument for the greatest passing season college football has ever seen.
Some college quarterbacks are remembered for their numbers. Vince Young is remembered for his moments. He went 30-2 as Texas' starting quarterback, won his final 20 starts and saved his best football for the biggest stage.
Young was already one of the best players in the country by 2005, becoming the first FBS player ever to throw for 3,000 yards and rush for 1,000 in the same season. But what really separates him for me is what he did in back-to-back Rose Bowls. Young accounted for five touchdowns against Michigan in 2005, then somehow topped it a year later against USC.
Facing an undefeated USC team riding a 34-game winning streak, Young piled up 467 total yards and three touchdowns in the national championship game. With Texas trailing 38-33 and facing 4th-and-5 with 19 seconds left, he ran for the game-winning touchdown and then added the two-point conversion himself.
Young finished second to Reggie Bush in the Heisman voting that season. A few weeks later, he beat Bush and USC for the national championship. There are quarterbacks on this list with better numbers and more hardware, but if I needed one drive with a national championship on the line, I'm not sure I'd take anyone over Vince Young.
If you're just looking at the numbers, Tommie Frazier probably sticks out on this list. He never threw for 1,400 yards in a season and completed fewer than half of his career passes. But Nebraska wasn't asking him to throw it 40 times a game. Frazier ran one of the best option offenses college football has ever seen and went 33-3 as the starting quarterback.
He also came incredibly close to winning three straight national championships. Nebraska lost 18-16 to Florida State after the 1993 season when a potential game-winning field goal went wide, then won it all in each of the next two years. Frazier even missed seven games in 1994 because of blood clots before returning to help Nebraska come from behind against Miami for its first national title since 1971.
If you've never seen Frazier's final college game, his stat line only tells part of the story. He ran for 199 yards and two touchdowns as Nebraska destroyed undefeated No. 2 Florida 62-24, including a 75-yard TD run where he somehow broke seven tackles.
Frazier never won the Heisman Trophy and doesn't have the video-game passing numbers of some of the quarterbacks around him. But four conference titles, three straight trips to the national championship and back-to-back undefeated title seasons are pretty hard for me to argue with.
Am I a little biased as someone who grew up a Louisville fan and spent my high school years as a season ticket holder watching Lamar Jackson play? I sure am. But that doesn't make what he did any less ridiculous.
Jackson became the youngest Heisman winner ever in 2016, throwing for 3,543 yards and 30 touchdowns while running for another 1,571 yards and 21 scores. He put up 610 total yards against Syracuse, including that ridiculous hurdle that became one of the most iconic plays of the season, and accounted for five touchdowns in a 63-20 beatdown of No. 2 Florida State. Then he came back the next year and somehow produced even more total offense.
Jackson would probably be even higher on my list if Louisville had more team success. The Cardinals went just 9-4 during his Heisman season, with the defense allowing 37 points per game in their four losses. And if you want an idea of how much he was carrying that program, Louisville went from 8-5 in his final season to 2-10 and 0-8 in ACC play the year after he left, with head coach Bobby Petrino getting fired before the season was over.
Obviously, Jackson wasn't the only player Louisville lost, but that drop-off says a lot. Maybe my Louisville bias bumps him up a spot or two, but with more than 9,000 passing yards, 4,000 rushing yards and a Heisman Trophy, I don't think I have to work too hard to defend this one.
Baker Mayfield might have the best underdog story on this list. He walked on at Texas Tech, won the starting job as a true freshman, transferred to Oklahoma and somehow ended up walking on again. By the end of his career, he was the first modern-era Heisman winner to begin his career as a walk-on.
Mayfield wasn't a one-year wonder, either. He finished fourth, third and first in Heisman voting during his three seasons as Oklahoma's starter while leading the Sooners to three straight Big 12 titles. He set the FBS record for passing efficiency in 2016 and then casually broke his own record the next year.
The numbers were only part of what made Baker, well, Baker. He played with a swagger that made him incredibly fun to watch if you were rooting for Oklahoma and probably pretty annoying if you weren't. Nothing sums that up better than beating No. 2 Ohio State on the road and then planting the Oklahoma flag at midfield afterward.
Mayfield never won the national championship that most of the quarterbacks above him did, but that’s about the only thing missing from his college résumé. Going from a twice-over walk-on to a Heisman winner, three-time conference champion and one of the most efficient passers college football has ever seen is more than enough to earn him this spot.
Johnny Manziel certainly had his share of off-the-field controversy, but I'm not sure anyone on this list was more fun to watch. For two years, “Johnny Football” ran around making plays that looked like they had absolutely no chance of working until they somehow did.
Manziel became the first freshman ever to win the Heisman Trophy in 2012, throwing for 3,706 yards and running for another 1,410. And if there were still any doubts about whether a freshman could handle the SEC, he pretty much ended them by going into Tuscaloosa and leading Texas A&M past No. 1 Alabama 29-24.
The crazy part is that Manziel actually got better as a passer the next year, throwing for 4,114 yards and 37 touchdowns. He finished with 9,989 yards of total offense in just 26 games, meaning he came 11 yards short of 10,000 in only two seasons.
That's ultimately what keeps him from being higher for me: we only got two years, and Texas A&M never won the SEC or a national championship with him. But Johnny Football packed about as much excitement into those two seasons as anyone I've ever watched.
Danny Wuerffel wasn't exactly Johnny Football. He wasn't going to scramble around for 15 seconds and somehow turn a broken play into a highlight, but he didn't need to. Wuerffel was the perfect quarterback for Steve Spurrier's Fun 'n' Gun offense, and what he did through the air was pretty ridiculous for the mid-1990s.
When Wuerffel left Florida, his 114 touchdown passes were the most in SEC history and second-most in FBS history. Even crazier, nearly one out of every 10 passes he attempted went for a touchdown, and his 163.6 career passing efficiency rating was also an FBS record at the time.
Florida won the SEC Championship in all four seasons Wuerffel was there. After getting crushed by Tommie Frazier and Nebraska in the 1995 national championship game, the Gators came right back the next year. Wuerffel won the Heisman and threw nine touchdown passes in his final two college games, beating Alabama for the SEC title and Florida State for the national championship.
That 52-20 win over Florida State gave Florida its first national championship and was a fitting ending to Wuerffel's career. His stats may not look quite as crazy after 30 years of increasingly pass-heavy offenses, but relative to his era, there weren't many quarterbacks putting up numbers like these.
If you only know Doug Flutie for one throw against Miami, you're missing most of the reason he's on this list. At about 5-foot-10, Flutie became a four-year starter at Boston College and put up passing numbers that were almost unheard of in the early 1980s.
By the time he finished, Flutie was the NCAA's all-time leader with 10,579 passing yards and the first FBS quarterback ever to break the 10,000-yard mark. He finished third in the Heisman voting as a junior before throwing for 3,454 yards and 27 touchdowns and winning it as a senior.
Of course, we still have to talk about the Hail Mary. Flutie threw for 472 yards against Miami before launching the game-winning touchdown to Gerard Phelan with six seconds left in a 47-45 win. Here's my favorite part: the play didn't actually win him the Heisman. The ballots had already been mailed before the game.
Flutie doesn't have a national championship like most of the quarterbacks above him, but that's also why context matters. He turned Boston College into a nationally relevant program — at the time, at least — and left school as college football's all-time passing leader. Throw in a play we're still talking about more than 40 years later, and that's more than enough for the final spot on my top 10 list.
