Stadio Olimpico plays host to an early Serie A title showdown on Saturday. Both hosts Roma and champions Inter have made perfect starts to the season, but Roma's exceptional defensive metrics could prove the difference between the two sides. While Inter lead the league with 12.02 xG, while Roma are close behind at 11.29; the bigger separation comes defensively, where Gian Piero Gasperini’s side have conceded only 2.73 xGA compared with Inter’s 4.93. With Roma available at 36¢ despite home advantage and a healthier midfield, the hosts look slightly undervalued.
Why Roma Represent Prediction Market Value

“Inter have produced the higher attacking volume, but Roma have been almost as productive while defending considerably better. The hosts have generated 11.29 xG and conceded only 2.73 xGA, giving them the stronger expected-goal differential, while their two home matches have produced 6.09 xG against only 1.05 xGA. Inter also arrive without Hakan Çalhanoğlu, an important loss against Roma’s aggressive midfield pressure. At 36¢, the home side are priced below our 41% win projection.”
Roma have the stronger xG differential
Their 11.29 xG and 2.73 xGA produce a +8.56 xGD, compared with Inter’s +7.09 from 12.02 xG and 4.93 xGA, though Roma have faced aruably a softer schedule than the visitors.
Roma are outstanding at Olimpico and the data backs it up
Roma’s 6.09 xG and 1.05 xGA across two home matches is a small sample, but the defensive strength at the Olimpico is a continuation of last season. They allowed only 14.96 xGA across 19 home league games in 2025/26, or 0.79 per match, while conceding a league-low 10 goals. The attacking rate has jumped sharply this season, but the home defensive control is established rather than new.
Çalhanoğlu is a major loss for Inter
Çalhanoğlu' absence could be especially harmful to Inter's chances against an aggressive Roma press. He is averaging 3.3 chances created and 6.6 accurate long balls per 90, while producing 21.8 final-third passes per 90 in Serie A this season, his absence means more responsibility falls to Nicolo Barella and Piotr Zielinski in ball progression. Against a Roma side allowing only 0.68 xGA per game, making Inter's buildup even slightly less efficient could materially reduce the quality of chances they create.

The table shows why this is closer than the market’s slight Inter favoritism suggests. Inter generate more volume, averaging 25 shots per game, but Roma have produced higher average shot quality and conceded almost half as much xGA.
Roma have conceded only 2.73 xGA in four matches, or 0.68 per game, while allowing a single actual goal. That level of finishing prevention will regress, but the underlying defensive process is still comfortably stronger than Inter’s 1.23 xGA per game.
The home split makes the matchup particularly interesting. Roma have allowed just 1.05 xGA across 180 minutes at the Olimpico, while producing 6.09 themselves. Gasperini’s side are not simply protecting leads; they have been controlling where games are played.
Inter remain the toughest attacking test Roma have faced. Cristian Chivu’s side have generated 12.02 xG from 100 shots, scored 13 goals and averaged 66% possession in Serie A this season. Monday’s 5-3 win over Udinese also demonstrated how quickly they can turn territorial dominance into repeated chances.
The weakness is that games have become more open than Chivu would want. Inter have conceded six league goals from 4.93 xGA, including three against Udinese, so Roma should have opportunities if they can play through the first pressure.
Çalhanoğlu’s injury is more significant here than a routine midfield absence. He is central to Inter’s ability to receive from the back three, change the angle of buildup and find the next line before opponents can lock onto possession.
Roma’s pressure under Gasperini is designed to make exactly those early phases uncomfortable. Nicolò Barella and Piotr Zieliński can still progress the ball, but removing Çalhanoğlu reduces Inter’s ability to dictate where Roma’s press moves. That could create opportunities for Paulo Dybala, Matías Soulé and Donyell Malen to attack before Inter have recovered their defensive shape.
This is the matchup that should decide the game. Inter average 25 shots per match, while Roma have conceded just 0.68 xGA per game. Something has to give. If Inter can turn their possession into the same volume they have produced against weaker defenses, the visitors have enough attacking depth to overwhelm even Roma’s strong start.
If Roma force those attempts into lower-value areas, their own attack becomes increasingly important. They are averaging 2.82 xG per game themselves, so this is not a team reliant on defending deep and stealing a result.
Inter have produced marginally more attacking volume, but Roma have been the more balanced team. Their +8.56 xGD leads Inter’s +7.09, their average chance quality is higher, and their defensive numbers are substantially stronger.
The margins remain small enough that the draw and an Inter victory are both realistic outcomes, but a 36¢ Roma price does not fully reflect their home advantage, defensive performance or Inter’s midfield absences. Our projection makes Roma 41% to win, leaving enough separation for the home side to be the preferred position.
